The MG A Twin Cam Coupé is among the most remarkable and exclusive sports cars ever produced by the British manufacturer MG. While the standard MGA was already renowned for its elegant lines, agile handling and typically British sports car character, MG took a significant step forward with the introduction of the Twin Cam in 1958. The result was a technically sophisticated and considerably more powerful version, developed for enthusiastic drivers seeking more than just a stylish sports car.
At the heart of the Twin Cam lies its remarkable 1,588 cc four-cylinder engine with twin overhead camshafts, an impressive technical development for a British sports car of the 1950s. Producing 108 hp, this engine delivered significantly better performance than the conventional MGA, while its high-revving character and sporty exhaust note provided a particularly engaging driving experience. The chassis also received considerable attention, including four disc brakes and special Dunlop centre-lock wheels. The Twin Cam was therefore not simply a more luxurious MGA, but a genuine sporting evolution of the original concept.
A particularly interesting technical improvement to this example is the installation of a Hi-Gear Engineering MGA 5-Speed Gearbox Conversion Kit. This conversion uses a Ford Type 9 five-speed gearbox and provides an additional fifth gear with an overdrive effect. As a result, the engine runs at lower RPM at higher speeds, reducing engine noise and vibrations while making longer journeys more enjoyable. Thanks to the specially developed conversion kit, the classic appearance of the interior is preserved, while the car benefits from more precise gear changes and significantly improved driving comfort. A valuable addition that combines the authentic character of the Twin Cam with greater usability on modern roads.
What makes the MG A Twin Cam particularly attractive today is its exceptional rarity. Approximately 2,111 Twin Cam examples were built in total, of which only 323 were produced as closed Coupés. With its elegant fixed roofline, refined proportions and distinctive British appearance, the Coupé represents the most exclusive body style of this remarkable MG. The combination of its rare bodywork and advanced Twin Cam technology makes this model particularly desirable among collectors and enthusiasts of historic British sports cars.
According to the official British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, this remarkable MG A Twin Cam Coupé was built between 12 and 26 February 1959, before leaving the factory on 27 February 1959. Its first registration dates from 15 March 1959. The car was originally finished in elegant Old English White, complemented by a contrasting red interior. As a left-hand-drive export vehicle, it was also supplied with an interesting selection of factory equipment.
The original Competition Seats and particularly rare Cold Air Ventilation Kit deserve special attention. The latter is among the less common factory options available on the Twin Cam and further emphasises the exclusive character of this example. The Celsius temperature gauge and speedometer calibrated in km/h were also part of its original specification. Together with the distinctive Dunlop centre-lock wheels and four disc brakes, these features create an attractive combination of sporting engineering and special factory details. The Heritage Trust certificate confirms the original equipment; the current presence of each individual option has yet to be verified.
This example has undergone a recent professional restoration, during which the bodywork, engine compartment and underside were carefully attended to. The bodywork was professionally repainted in its original factory colour, Old English White, and is in excellent condition according to the inspection team. The combination of its elegant closed bodywork, historic colour scheme and sporting Twin Cam technology makes this MG a particularly attractive example.
The car is currently equipped with an authentic MG Twin Cam engine, preserving the original Twin Cam technology and its characteristic driving experience. Although this engine is not the one originally supplied with the chassis, the car retains a correct Twin Cam drivetrain. It therefore continues to offer the distinctive mechanical experience of the Twin Cam, with its characteristic high-revving engine and sporting performance.
When the MGA Twin Cam was first introduced, it experienced reliability issues associated with its technically advanced engine. As a result, many examples were modified or fitted with alternative engines early in their lives.
This example was no exception to that development. However, the car was subsequently refitted with an original Twin Cam engine, incorporating technical improvements to address the known weaknesses of the original design. This MGA therefore combines the distinctive character of the Twin Cam with improved reliability.
The accompanying documentation is another important asset. In addition to the Heritage Trust Certified Copy of Factory Record, which confirms the original factory specifications, the car comes with manuals, maintenance invoices and extensive documentation of the restoration work carried out. Belgian registration documents and a Car-Pass complete the file.
Today, the 1959 MG A Twin Cam Coupé is much more than simply a classic British sports car. It represents an exceptionally rare piece of MG history, bringing together technical ambition, elegant design and pure driving pleasure. A characterful classic for anyone seeking not only a beautiful MGA, but above all one of the most exclusive versions ever produced by the marque.
