The final and most refined XK generation – the 1957 Jaguar XK150 Fixed Head Coupé
With the introduction of the XK120, Jaguar played a pivotal role in popularising the sports car in the years following the Second World War. Throughout the 1950s, the company continuously refined the concept, making each successive generation more sophisticated and comfortable. Compared with its celebrated predecessor, the XK150 featured less pronounced flowing front wings, resulting in a cleaner, more modern appearance. More importantly, the revised body design created significantly more interior space, enhancing both comfort and practicality.
The XK150 nevertheless remained true to the formula that had made the XK series such an outstanding success. It retained a robust chassis, straightforward engineering, abundant torque and a chassis tuned for confident high-speed cornering. The most significant technical advance lay behind the wheels, where four-wheel disc brakes—developed and proven in competition, just like Jaguar's legendary XK engine—provided a major leap in braking performance. Both technologies had already demonstrated their superiority in Jaguar's victorious campaigns at Le Mans.
Visually, the XK150 could be recognised by its larger wraparound windscreen, wider doors, lower waistline and a redesigned front end featuring a distinctive radiator grille. Inside, the cabin offered considerably greater comfort and space, reinforcing the XK150's position as a refined grand tourer. At the same time, it remained faithful to its sporting heritage, combining impressive performance with the elegant styling that continues to place the XK models among the finest British sports cars ever built.
Power is provided by Jaguar's legendary 3,442 cc twin overhead-camshaft inline six-cylinder engine, widely regarded as one of the most significant automotive engine designs of the post-war era. In standard specification, it produces 193 bhp, delivering exceptional smoothness, abundant torque and effortless flexibility. Paired with a precise four-speed gearbox, the XK150 offers a wonderfully refined driving experience, blending spirited performance with the comfort expected of a true grand touring motor car.
The increased refinement of the XK150 was largely a response to demand from the American market, then the most important export destination for European sports cars. It was to the United States that the example offered here was originally delivered. Remarkably, it is the 49th left-hand-drive Fixed Head Coupé built, making it an exceptionally early production car. A Jaguar Heritage Certificate has been requested from the factory archives and is expected to shed further light on the car's early history.
What is already known is that its first owner ordered the car in typically American fashion with an automatic transmission. It was also equipped with the ingenious Speed Hold control, invented and patented by Jaguar engineer Tom Jones, which prevents the automatic gearbox from repeatedly shifting down into third gear when climbing steep gradients.
The XK150 subsequently found its way to Germany before being imported into Switzerland. Around fourteen years ago, it received a complete repaint in Italy. While the finish now displays a number of paint blisters, the car remains in mechanically very sound condition. It benefits from a valid Swiss Veteran registration dating from 2024 and, more importantly, underwent extensive mechanical refurbishment by a renowned Swiss Jaguar specialist from 2020 onwards, furthermore, the vehicle is accompanied by a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate. The engine, transmission and braking system were all comprehensively overhauled, ensuring that this exceptionally early XK150 is as rewarding to drive as it is significant from a collector's perspective.
