There are classic cars that you mainly admire when they are standing still. And there are cars that only really begin to make sense once you drive them. In our view, the Jaguar XK150 clearly belongs in the second category. Of course it is elegant, of course the proportions are right, but it is especially on the road that you understand why this car built such a strong reputation in its day.
The XK150 appeared in 1957 as a further development of the XK120 and XK140. The basic formula remained familiar, but Jaguar improved the car in exactly the areas that mattered. The body became wider, the windshield was now a single piece, and the interior offered more space as well. More importantly, the XK150 received disc brakes, allowing Jaguar to bring the braking performance much more closely in line with the speeds the car was capable of reaching.
Under the hood lies the familiar 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine. A powerplant that suits the character of the XK150 perfectly: smooth, strong, and above all very pleasant to use. The sound is perhaps one of its greatest charms. Not a loud or aggressive engine, but that characteristic full-bodied six-cylinder note that builds beautifully as you press the throttle a little harder.
The example we are offering was fully restored body-off and today presents in particularly well-cared-for condition. The body is straight, the finish is neat, and mechanically the car feels equally convincing. Inside, things only get better.
The red leather seats and matching red carpets give the interior a tremendous amount of atmosphere. Combined with the wood steering wheel, they create exactly that warm, classic look that suits an XK from this period so well. The dark exterior color provides a beautiful contrast and gives the whole car a particularly elegant appearance without making it feel too heavy.
One of the great things about the XK150 is that it still feels surprisingly usable. The longer journeys for which cars like this were originally built still suit it extremely well. The seating position is comfortable, the engine has plenty of flexibility, and the entire car moves with a sense of calm that you do not find in every sports car from the 1950s.
That was already recognized at the time. The XK150 was praised for its combination of speed, comfort, and refinement. And all these years later, that remains one of its strongest qualities. This example demonstrates that very well. Beautifully restored, carefully maintained inside and out, with a wonderful six-cylinder engine and a color combination that feels exactly right. A Jaguar to admire, absolutely. But above all, one to drive.
