When Citroen presented the SM at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970, it was the result of many years of development work. An aerodynamic and avant-garde design by in-house designer Robert Opron, optimized and enhanced hydropneumatic suspension, and a compact, powerful engine developed by Maserati, in which Citroen held a stake, were brought together.
The result was a work of art without equal, which was not only fast at 220 km/h but also extremely comfortable thanks to its sophisticated suspension, and was aptly nicknamed the “flying sofa”.
The following year, Henri Chapron, who had built more than 1,000 convertibles and numerous coupes for the DS, presented the SM as a convertible. Among other reasons due to the elaborate manufacturing process, these were twice as expensive as the coupe. Only five examples were built, or a maximum of eight including later “replicas”. Approximately 20 years later, a northern German entrepreneur commissioned coachbuilder and vehicle construction master Norbert Waßmann from Zweibrücken in Saarland to convert an SM into a convertible. The basis for the conversion was a coupe from 1991 with its first registration in March 1972, from a single owner. After the conversion, the car remained in the same ownership until it was acquired by its current owner in 2021.
The leather interior is still original (very rare and with a beautiful patina), as is the technically refurbished “Continental Edison” radio, which is a very rare equipment detail and was developed specifically for the SM. The Weber carburetors were recently overhauled and tuned by a specialist company, and the entire mechanical system was inspected and improved at a cost of more than € 10,000,-.
