Some cars are more than machines, they are statements. Built in an era before computers dictated every line and curve, when design was still the guiding principle. The 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale is exactly that. A flamboyant Italian, as if escaped from an artist’s dream, its hand-formed body a reminder of a craft that no longer exists today.
The Sprint Speciale, or “S S,” was born directly from Alfa’s legendary B.A.T. studies (Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica) of the 1950s, futuristic concepts shaped by Carrozzeria Bertone and inspired by jet-age aerodynamics. That same philosophy found its way onto public roads with the S S. Its drag coefficient? Just 0.29, a figure that remains impressive even now.
Beneath the hood lies the heart of a true driver’s car: a 1,300 cc all-aluminum four-cylinder fitted with twin Weber carburetors. With about 116 horsepower on tap, it is more than capable of propelling this featherweight two-seater to nearly 200 km/h. At the time, that was significantly faster than the standard Giulietta Sprint.
What makes this particular example stand out is its story. Delivered new in Rome in 1961, it remained in the same family in Palermo until 2015. It underwent a restoration in the past, always with respect for originality. The Alfa has only ever been repainted once, in its original Alfa Rosso, with the paint applied in a deliberately thin layer to preserve its character. The interior was also reupholstered, striking a careful balance between freshness and authenticity.
Mechanically, the car has been overhauled and diligently maintained ever since. Engine, gearbox, and brakes are all in excellent condition, making this Alfa a driver’s car in the truest sense. It invites you to take it out on the road, and that may be its greatest charm: it radiates authenticity without ever feeling over-restored.
The interior is pure Italian classicism: minimalistic, beautifully chosen materials, and a steering wheel that could pass as sculpture. The moment you sit inside, you understand what makes this car so special: the harmony of history, beauty, and light-footed mechanics.
