Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I – The Epitome of British Nobility from 1957
“On the Road to Perfection” – so headlined Automobil Revue in the spring of 1955 when introducing the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. The new model represented an evolutionary development of its predecessor, the Silver Dawn. The engineers devoted considerable time and effort to eliminating the transmission of road noise from the new chassis to the body. Thanks to its exquisitely tuned suspension, the Silver Cloud offered an “almost entirely shock-free ride even on poor roads,” as the testers observed at the time. Steering is effortless, with no unwanted reactions, and the intricately designed brakes provide powerful deceleration.
Driving a Silver Cloud, however, was also simply great fun, as auto, motor und sport noted: “It is clear that around 70 per cent of all Rolls-Royce drivers, contrary to popular belief, do not employ a chauffeur but drive their car themselves. For, aside from being a distinguished means of transport, the stately limousine is also a car designed for spirited driving.” Among the few chauffeured owners at the time was Princess Grace Kelly, wife of Prince Rainier III of Monaco, who received a Silver Cloud as a wedding gift in 1956.
The Silver Cloud we are offering comes with a full folder of English repair invoices, dating back to 1967, when the car was owned by an English banker. In 1986, the Silver Cloud came to its current owner in Switzerland, who undertook a thorough restoration of the bodywork, completed in 1989. The grey paintwork was refreshed following these extensive body repairs – a task that had to be repeated in 2020 due to flaking paint.
With the exception of the braking system, this Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud I is in good condition. For road registration, a brake overhaul and a few additional works are required.
