"It's one of the world's most luxurious cars. In fact, only the Rolls-Royce Phantom comes close. It can carry a driver, front passenger and two rear passengers on a serene, silent and spacious journey." – Autocar magazine.
Few industry observers would have predicted the revival of the Maybach brand after almost 50 years of dormancy, but that is exactly what Daimler-Benz did in 1997 when it presented a luxury concept car at that year's Tokyo Motor Show. In pre-war days Maybach had represented the absolute pinnacle of automotive technology, producing some of the most advanced, luxurious and expensive cars the world had ever seen, and its resurrection signalled Mercedes-Benz's intention to compete head-on with BMW-owned Rolls-Royce. Although it had not built any cars since 1940, Maybach had lived on as a manufacturer of proprietary engines, latterly as MTU Friedrichshaven, until its purchase by Daimler-Benz in 1960.
The revived brand's new dawn commenced in 2002 with the launch of the Maybach 57 and 62: a brace of high-performance luxury saloons that, inevitably, incorporated a good deal of contemporary Mercedes-Benz technology. The model designations were derived from their approximate lengths: 5.7 metres in the former's case and 6.2 metres in the latter's, and both were powered initially by a 5.5-litre 542bhp twin-turbocharged V12 engine. The 57 was intended for the owner/driver, while the longer 62 was aimed at the chauffeur-driven elite.
Ordered new by our vendor, this Maybach 62 is one of the very few delivered new to Belgium and is offered from a prominent Mercedes-Benz collection. Finished in Himalaya Dark Grey with Labrador Anthracite leather interior, it is one of the first series built after Maybach's return (the Certificate of Conformity is dated July 2003). Specification highlights include the following:
Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system
Headphones
DVD player (Region 2)
Control console for special functions
Intercom system
Remote opening for garage door
Roller blinds to rear windows
Ventilated comfort seats front and rear (individually adjustable)
Folding tables
Refrigerator
Panoramic sunroof in glass
Heated steering wheel
Protective plate under crankcase
Spare wheel
Fire extinguisher
Keyless-go
Maybach 5-hole forged wheels
Wireless charging system for mobile phones in the back
and of course the Electro-transparent internal glass division
The price new was a staggering €516,000 (invoice on file). Always superbly looked-after and maintained throughout its life, the Maybach has covered 64,687 kilometres from new, not that you would know it, such is the car's wonderful condition. The car was used by the family, mainly chauffeur driven, as one would expect of a Maybach. It was also used for chauffeuring important visitors, and the vendor advises us that he was frequently asked to provide the car for movies, which he did. Regularly dealer-serviced, the last service was carried out in October 2021, since when only a few kilometres have been covered. Always kept on charge and stored on tyre-cushions, the car starts instantly and runs well, with all features and options seemingly in working order. The ultimate in motoring luxury, this wonderful Maybach 62 is offered with the original purchase invoice; various invoices for work carried out; original and current Belgian registration documents; manufacturer's Certificate of Conformity; and all its original books and tools.
