Beschrijving

The Bugatti Type 57 was introduced in 1933 and was fitted with a brilliant 3.3 liter twin cam engine. It was one of the best grand touring machines on the market, but without any particular sporting demands. At the Paris Motor Show in 1934, the designer made a first attempt to give it a more dynamic image by presenting a "Grand Raid" version with several modifications to the chassis. One of the most notable of these was the driving position, shifted further back to allow for a sportier body. Overall, it is believed that Bugatti built 10 examples of these particular versions. It was one of these chassis that Gaston Descollas, then a Bugatti agent in Marseille and amateur rally driver, noticed: in 1934 he won the French Rally des Alpes and the international Coupé des Alpes behind the wheel of a Type 57 Galibier, and the sportier one undoubtedly has him Addressed the character of this new version. He bought chassis no. 57300 and had a light and minimalist torpedo body made of aluminum mounted over a wooden structure. According to a friend of the Descollas family, this was done by the Marseille coachbuilder Dubos and the car was registered on January 3, 1935 under the number 5822 CA 7. When the car was completed, it took part in the Paris-St-Raphaël rally on February 27, driven by Gaston's wife Claire Descollas. This was a very popular event with women drivers and over the years many well-known names have participated including Hellé Nizza, Betty Haig, Claudine Trautman, Annie Soisbault and Marianne Hoepfner. In 1935, Olga Thibault won in a Peugeot 201. Shortly thereafter, Gaston Descollas entered the "Critérium international de tourisme Paris-Nice", which was simply known as "Paris-Nice" and started on April 13th. There were over 100 participants and this was a rally that attracted experienced drivers. Last year it was won by Jean Trévoux, who was just starting an impressive career behind the wheel of a Hotchkiss 20, in which he would win the Monte-Carlo Rally, among other things. Gaston Descollas put in a great performance and won the event before taking two more wins at the Rallye de la FNCAF and the Alpes Françaises. In August he was less fortunate in Liège-Rome-Liège when he was forced to retire. In 1936 the Bugatti was equipped with a closed Ventoux body, which was built by Gangloff and is more comfortable for touring. On March 24, 1936, the car was registered in the name of Mr Giniès with the number 4473 ZA 3 (Vaucluse) before returning to the Bouches-du-Rhône a few months later. It was registered on May 6, 1936 in the name of Mr. Vives under number 6426 CA 8. The Bugatti remained in Spain until December 18, 1940, when it was sold to Mr Senchermes from Barcelona, who registered it under the registration number B-67.700. Amazingly, this Bugatti remained in the same ownership until 2004, the year it was bought by the previous owner, a German enthusiast. He extensively restored the vehicle in the following years, which was extensively documented. Today the vehicle is in the same condition as it was when it was delivered.
