This Henderson Model K comes from the early production run of that legendary four-cylinder series, which was launched in Chicago following the takeover of the brand by Ignaz Schwinn (Excelsior Motor Mfg. & Supply Co.) in 1917. Compared to its predecessor, the Model D, the Model K was more robust and powerful, and featured a pressure-circulating engine lubrication system – a technical innovation with which Henderson played a pioneering role in American motorcycle manufacturing. The side-valve inline four-cylinder engine produces around 18 PS from a displacement of 1,301 ccm.
The numbers K1002 and K1003 are stamped on the engine block, whilst the number K1550 appears on a component at the front of the engine. The number K2249 is found on the magneto mounting – according to Mr Bill Klein of Henderson Motorcycle, this indicates the year of manufacture as 1921. The number 1206 is stamped on the frame, which suggests a year of manufacture of 1920. There is no unambiguously assignable, continuous serial number running across all components; the numbers mentioned therefore only allow us to conclude that the motorcycle was built sometime between approximately 1919 and 1921, without it being possible to conclusively determine the exact year of manufacture. The motorbike has been in the current owner’s possession since 1992.
