Druschkowitsch MAYA HMW 50N – 1957 – extremely rare Austrian scooter

For sale is an exceptionally rare piece of Austrian two-wheel history.

Druschkowitsch & Co. Maya scooter
Type HMW 50 N
Year 1957

The scooter was built by Metallwarenfabrik Druschkowitsch & Co. in Gratkorn near Graz (Austria) and equipped with an HMW engine from Hallein.

The Maya was an attempt to create an Austrian alternative to the Vespa scooters of the 1950s. However, the project only existed for a short time and was not commercially successful.

In total, only around 300 vehicles were produced, and only about 80 were actually sold.
Today, it is believed that only a few dozen examples still exist.

This makes the Maya one of the rarest Austrian scooters ever built.

Early production number

Frame number according to the original manufacturer plate:

835018

For comparison, two other known vehicles have frame numbers in the following range:

  • a currently auctioned vehicle with frame number 838xxx
  • another documented collector vehicle in the 836xxx range

With 835018, this scooter appears to be from a very early production batch of 1957.

Original manufacturer plate

The scooter still carries the original Druschkowitsch & Co. identification plate, including:

  • manufacturer information
  • type HMW 50 N
  • year 1957
  • frame number

On rare vehicles like this, original plates are often missing or replaced, so having the original plate still present is highly important for collectors.

Technical and historical features

The Maya scooter had several unusual design features and was advertised at the time with:

  • HMW 50N engine
  • tool-free wheel change
  • large luggage compartment
  • rear spare wheel
  • comfortable sprung saddle
  • long swingarm front suspension

Period advertisements promoted the scooter with claims such as:

  • easy step-through frame
  • generous luggage space
  • quick wheel replacement
  • comfortable ride

Despite these innovative ideas, the scooter could not compete with strong rivals of the time such as Vespa, Lambretta, KTM and Lohner, which led to the short production run.

Ironically, this short production today makes the Maya extremely rare and interesting for collectors.

History of this vehicle

This scooter comes from first ownership within the family and was stored in a garage for many years.

Technical condition

A technical restoration was carried out in 2024, including:

  • mechanical overhaul
  • new tires

The scooter is:

✔ running and rideable
✔ registered
✔ road inspection valid until July 2027
✔ test ride possible

Location:

Dornbirn, Vorarlberg (Austria)

Originality / known modifications

As with most vehicles of this age, some changes were made over time:

  • paint changed about 50 years ago from blue to red
  • Maya logo reproduced using 3D printing
  • mirror not original
  • exhaust not original

These points are transparently mentioned.

Cosmetic condition

Very nice rideable collector condition.

Minor signs of age and use such as:

  • small scratches on the rear body panel
  • general age-related patina

Overall a very honest vehicle with good original substance.

Documentation / literature

The sale includes the book:

“Mopedroller aus Österreich – Band 1 – Die 50er Jahre”

This book contains 18 pages dedicated to the Maya scooter, including:

  • historical background
  • numerous photos
  • the original advertising poster
  • technical specifications

This documentation is particularly interesting for collectors.

Collector significance

The Maya is one of the rarest Austrian scooters from the post-war period.

Because of the very small production run, these vehicles rarely appear on the market.

This particular example is especially interesting due to:

  • early frame number
  • original manufacturer plate
  • complete vehicle
  • running and road registered
  • documented in specialist literature

Price: €4200

Reasonable offers from collectors or enthusiasts are welcome.

Viewing / test ride

Viewing and test ride possible by appointment.

Location:

Dornbirn, Vorarlberg (Austria)

Please only serious inquiries from collectors or enthusiasts.
