Description

Volkswagen began development work on what was originally intended as a direct successor to the Scirocco in 1981. The original Scirocco design was quite successful from Giuliaro's own hand, but as time went on, some serious updates were required. The final design was beautifully made in-house at VW. The updates and changes were so extensive, that it ended up as a completely independent new model, positioned as a more powerful and luxurious sports car – namely the Corrado. Initially with 4-cylinder engines with the top model GTI G60 equipped with a supercharger, all based on their Golf siblings. From 1991 the fine VR6 engine came as the top variant, which required major technical changes, especially in the front section, to be able to accommodate and handle the more powerful engine, which now delivered a full 190hp. Note therefore the wider front fenders. The Corrado model was facelifted in 1991 with, among other things, a larger fuel tank, new instrumentation, and EDS (precursor to ESP) in the VR6 version.

The car here was imported from Sweden by an enthusiast and has been part of a larger collection. The car drives exceptionally well, with a intoxicating sound from the brilliant 6-cylinder engine (please note this is the more powerful European 2.9 version – not to be confused with the 2.8 that was delivered to the US markets), which also stands out for its good low-end traction and its willingness to rev. Behind the steering wheel you feel at home  – the Germans know how to make that – and both steering and gearbox are a true pleasure to work with. All in the well-known high and durable Volkswagen quality. The previous owner has sacrificed a lot of money to bring the car into top condition, and the engine has also been overhauled. Driving the car is pure fun and true petrolheads will find great pleasure driving it around your local b-roads as well as at high speed on the autobahn.
