Known officially as the Volkswagen Type 2 and depending on body type, either as a Transporter, Kombi or Microbus, this Volkswagen was also known informally as the Bus in the US and Camper in the UK. Introduced in 1950 as Volkswagen's second car model, it was derived from their first, the Beetle, which was designated the Type 1. This second-generation Type 2 lost its distinctive split front windscreen and was slightly larger and considerably heavier than its predecessor. Its common nickname is 'Bay-window' or Bay for short. The new model also did away with the swing axle rear suspension and transfer boxes previously used to raise ride height. Instead, half-shafts were fitted with constant velocity joints. Brazil contained the last factory in the world that produced the T2. Production in Brazil ceased on 31st December 2013 due to the introduction of more stringent safety regulations, thus marking the end of an era with the rear-engine Volkswagens which first originated in 1935.

Devon campervan conversions, particularly those based on the Volkswagen T2, are known for their British design and practicality, offering a compact yet functional interior with features like a signature pop-top roof. Devon Conversions, established in 1956, was the official UK-based Volkswagen converter and is known for quality, design, and value. Modern Devon conversions can be found on various base vehicles like Fiat Ducato, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, and Peugeot Boxer.

This rare original Devon conversion offered in white over green and can comfortably be referred to as in 'time warp' condition throughout. Not only was this example converted from new by Devon Conversions it was also uprated with a 2.0 litre Porsche engine from new, a rare and expensive upgrade in 1977. Since its purchase the van has been owned by one family with tenure transferring to the son, we believe, in 2016. MoT'd at the same test station for much of its life between its summer jaunts of which there were few hence a remarkably low mileage for a camper, just 36,556 which equates to less than 1,000 per year of its life. The Devon conversion is fantastic and still in its original guise as per 1977, the interior in fabulous order featuring cooking, refrigeration and sleeping options. The outside is certainly solid, the paintwork and brightwork could be tidied up but a good prod around gave a lot of confidence and when raised up on the ramp at the local MoT test station, who have look after this car for decades, this example looks in fine fettle.

Having been off the road since 2019 it is recommended that the van should be treated to a light recommissioning or service, but it runs and drives as it should. The V5 has been misplaced so a new owner will need to apply for a replacement using a V62 with the DVLA. Viewing for this example is highly recommended, the photos on our website give a good idea of the quality but we are sure you would be further impressed in person. This fantastic camper is due its next summer holiday! Consigned by Mathew Priddy
