This is a rare opportunity to acquire a truly exceptional example of the 1999 Brabus 450 WideStar, one of just three bespoke examples built for the UK—each hand-finished by Brabus in Bottrop, Germany. Of the three, one was built for legendary engineer Gordon Murray, and another for Formula 1 driver David Coulthard, each to their own unique specification. This car, built to an equally high standard, predates the official Brabus Smart production vehicles by almost two years, representing a pivotal moment in the history of the Smart brand and its high-performance evolution.

Originally imported in January 1999 by Belgian Smart dealer Mannes Mobility, this car has had just one devoted owner from new, a respected figure in coachbuilding and automotive design. In early 2000, it was sent back to Brabus for a bespoke WideStar conversion, created through a direct collaboration between Hooper & Co. (Coachbuilders) Ltd and Brabus founder Bodo Buschmann. The resulting vehicle combines mechanical upgrades, body enhancements, and a completely re-trimmed interior in keeping with the highest traditions of coachbuilt excellence.

Finished in Jet Black over Silver Tridion, this example remains entirely accident-free and retains all its original paintwork. It has covered just 49,500 miles in 26 years and is accompanied by a comprehensive, fully documented service history and archive. A pair of fully refurbished Brabus wheels (one front and one rear) is also included.

Brabus WideStar upgrades include:

  • Brabus SB1 engine upgrade
  • Brabus Bilstein suspension all round with upgraded rear springs
  • Disc brakes on all four wheels
  • Widened track front and rear
  • Brabus alloy wheels – 16” front, 17” rear
  • Re-mapped gearbox with Brabus paddle shift
  • Stainless steel free-flow exhaust

Interior and Brabus enhancements include:

  • Alcantara-trimmed cabin: solid outer Alcantara with perforated inserts and brushed seat pockets
  • Light silver-grey Alcantara matched to the exterior Tridion cell
  • Brabus mid-blue perforated leather for seat bolsters and backrests, stitched in silver-grey
  • Custom-dyed Alcantara carpets throughout, including the boot area, with Brabus overmats
  • Brabus ‘B’ embossed headrests
  • Brabus carbon door pulls
  • Brabus seat runner covers
  • Brabus steering wheel with carbon detailing and paddle shift
  • Brabus gear selector and matching handbrake pull with aluminium surrounds
  • Brabus aluminium key surround
  • Brabus white dials with blue lettering (main cluster, rev counter, and clock)
  • Brabus carbon surrounds and outer rings for rev counter and clock
  • Brabus carbon binnacle surround
  • Brabus aluminium accelerator and brake pedals
  • Brabus fire extinguisher
  • Brabus VDO navigation system with ceiling-mounted VDO screen

As a historical note, this car originates from the early days of Smart, when the Swiss company Swatch still held an interest in the brand before full integration into Mercedes-Benz.

With just three built to this level—one for Gordon Murray, one for David Coulthard, and this privately commissioned example—this Brabus 450 WideStar stands as an extraordinary and unrepeatable part of Brabus and Smart history. With one owner from new, original paintwork, extensive provenance, and a truly bespoke specification, this car represents a remarkable opportunity for collectors and marque enthusiasts alike.
