Description

When Mercedes-Benz introduced the 280 SE 3.5 Coupé in 1969, it marked the final chapter of the hand-built W111 series. These cars were assembled with a level of craftsmanship that would never return: solid hardwood trim, hand-fitted panels, interiors sewn with monk-like patience, and a build process that seemed blissfully unaware of concepts like “production deadlines.” Some people say the car is “built like a tank,” but only if tanks came with air-conditioning, polished chrome, and tailor-made leather seats.

The newly developed 3.5-litre V8 finally gave the elegant pillarless coupé the power and refinement it always deserved. With only 3,270 units produced, the 3.5 quickly became the most desirable version of the W111 range. Today it stands as one of the most collectible post-war Mercedes models—the last truly coachbuilt luxury Mercedes before full industrialisation took over.

What sets the 280 SE 3.5 apart is the seamless blend of timeless design and mechanical sophistication. The smooth overhead-cam V8, the whisper-quiet cabin trimmed in real solid wood, and the iconic pillarless silhouette make it feel both classic and surprisingly modern. It represents an era when luxury meant craftsmanship rather than technology—a car to savour, not to rush.

This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Coupé was originally delivered in Massachusetts and stayed with its first owner until 1993. Its history is exceptionally well documented, with thick folders of maintenance records and complete restoration documentation. The car received a bare-metal respray in its original Dark Olive Green, while the interior still wears its factory-correct Tan leather upholstery—both so well preserved it almost feels unfair to call it “vintage.”

The engine and transmission were professionally overhauled by specialists, and the car has been pampered ever since, with invoices confirming the work performed. Technically and cosmetically, the car is in excellent condition. The woodwork is in very good shape, the interior shows beautifully, and the car drives exactly as a well-kept W111 3.5 should. Notable features include air-conditioning, electric windows, and its desirable “green over tan” colour combination—one of the most sought-after specifications for this model.

With its extensive documentation, restored bodywork in the original colour, professionally rebuilt mechanicals, and rare specification, this 280 SE 3.5 stands out as an exceptional example of Mercedes-Benz’s final hand-built grand tourer—the kind of car you don’t just drive, but take out as if you were wearing your best suit.
