Description

This is an incredibly special, and interesting car – the only 1960's Ford Mustang we have ever had in right hand drive form. The history is quite remarkable too. Produced on December 11th 1967 at Ford’s Metuchen plant in New Jersey, the car was built in Acapulco Blue, with Black vinyl seats, power disc brakes and a black power hood. It had left dipping headlamps, indicating that it was destined for a right-hand drive market. Heavy duty export specification suspension was fitted. Whilst Ford never produced factory right-hand-drive Mustangs in the 1960s, it seems that some were converted to right hand drive by the Australian importer. Harder to explain is the KM speedometer, because although Australia started metrification in 1966, few cars had KM speedos until a few years later.

The V5 registration document shows a date of UK registration as 1st September 1968, just 9 months after build date. We have a copy of the original green log book showing that the car was registered to an owner in Edinburgh by March 1978. We have almost 40 years of old MOTs and it is clear that the car was little used, having covered only 14,000km (8700 miles) in the last 39 years. From 1983 to 2009 it had just one owner in Bristol and MOT records show very limited use during his ownership. Over the past four years, the Mustang has undergone a major restoration which included a bare metal repaint, power steering conversion, automatic gearbox rebuild and other detailed mechanical and electrical work which has totaled over £35,000. That includes £21,400 spent since early 2023. There's a comprehensive list of what was done - far too much to list here but the maintenance and restoration history file goes back to the 1980s. It contains invoices, photos and a USB data stick with all of the body restoration images. The Mustang first came to us late summer in 2023 and soon after arrival we displayed the car at Goodwood Revival. We found a new home for the car in the New Forest, carrying out a major service and diligent preparation work ahead of delivery. Due to a change in personal circumstances, less than a year on the recent owner has had to part with the car. The car is now available once again, creating an incredibly rare opportunity to purchase a RHD Mustang.

The J' type engine is absolutely superb with an Edelbrock manifold and four barrel carburettor more commonly seen on Cobras. J Code Mustangs were only produced for one year - 1968, featuring a 302Cubic inch (4929cc) V8 with a factory Four Barrel Carburettor which produced a surprisingly healthy and smooth power delivery. The automatic gearbox, rebuilt this year is superb and the rear axle quiet. Complemented by its superb electric power steering conversion, this Mustang is not only a show-stopper visually but a real pleasure to drive. The right-hand drive makes it very appealing and it is doubtful we will see another like it. The most recent documented valuation on this car is £55,000, still substantially less than has been invested in it since 2020. A report by a specialist pre-restoration, describes a very sound and straight Mustang. The current recorded 87980KMs equates to just 54,668 miles. We have no reason to doubt that this could be correct from new and we consider this gem of a car to be an unrepeatable find at £49,995.
