Despite having the enormously unenviable task of taking over from the 275 GTB/4, the Daytona Berlinetta successor is arguably even more synonymous with the notion of classic, front-engine Ferrari motoring. First shown to the public at the Paris Salon in 1968, the 365 GTB/4 would be the last V-12 grand tourer to emerge from Maranello while Ferrari was a truly independent concern, prior to Fiat buying a 40 per cent share from eponymous founder Enzo. Testament to the Daytona’s enduringly elegant design, the manufacturer’s brand-new 12Cilindri takes clear styling cues from its forefather nigh on six decades after its reveal.
Ordered in May 1973 by famed Ferrari importer Maranello Concessionaires of Egham in Surrey, chassis number 16773 offered here was one of just 158 examples of the 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta built in right-hand drive. According to a history report compiled by marque authority Marcel Massini, this United Kingdom-destined car was completed on 22 August in Rosso Chiaro over a Nero Connolly leather interior and was equipped with air conditioning. Further correspondence, in the form of a letter from Ferrari (available to view on file), details that it was then supplied new to the HR Owen dealership in London’s Golders Green area.
First registered on 29 October 1973, the Daytona Berlinetta was delivered to its first owner, Mr Reg Mansbridge of Grimsby, before passing to a new keeper after six months. The second owner, P Marshall of Lincolnshire, retained the 365 GTB/4 until July 1998, at which point the Ferrari moved for a short period to Hertfordshire under the custodianship of Mr John Nott. He immediately tasked Corns & Chiltern-Hunt (co-owned by Ferrari Owners’ Club GB Vice-President Nigel Chiltern-Hunt) with an extensive mechanical overhaul. The rebuilding of the suspension and brakes plus a refresh of the engine and gearbox exceeded £32,000.
Soon after, the serial Ferrari-collecting vendor purchased the car in June 1999. They commissioned Haslams Body Repairs of Bolton with a May 2001 repaint in factory-correct Rosso Chiaro. Mechanical maintenance ever since has largely been entrusted to marque specialist R&D Automotive of Manchester, with the most recent service completed in September 2024 at a cost of £1,341. Alongside invoices in the history file that documents this care, there are also MoT certificates spanning 1997 to 2018. This paper trail reinforces the odometer reading of 34,714 miles at the time of cataloguing.
Given the attention lavished upon chassis 16773 throughout its more recent history, it has been a prime entrant for various concours and display events. The car notably earned class wins at Gawsworth Hall, where it was adjudged to be the best grand tourer, and at the 2023 running of the popular Northern Ferrari Day gathering.
Cherished by its current owner for some 26 years, this stunningly presented, prized right-hand-drive Daytona Berlinetta is now ready for a new custodian. Finished in its factory colour combination and retaining its matching-numbers engine and gearbox, chassis number 16773 is accompanied by owner’s guides and a 1974-dated parts catalogue in a folio, two tool rolls, a jack, and car cover. In addition, the history file benefits from copies of the original Ferrari order documents.
The sale of this 365 GTB/4 presents a tantalising opportunity for all discerning British Ferrari collectors.
