HISTORY/DOCUMENTATION
What a great car to drive: this powerful convertible coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission. This 560 SL has the largest engine available at the time and was delivered new on 14 September 1988 in Brockton (Boston, USA). The car comes with a comprehensive ‘History File’. This includes a Carfax report, which states that the Mercedes has a damage-free history. The low mileage is also documented in this file. On 27 April 1992, it had 69,856 MLS, on 26 November 1993 99,000 MLS, on 27 June 1994 107,380 MLS, on 22 February 2002 110,157 MLS, 28 February 2003 111,588 MLS and 27 September 2011 125,593 MLS. The original documentation even includes the Mercedes-Benz Pre-Delivery Inspection Report, which was carried out before delivery to the first owner. The delivery booklet and original instruction manuals are also included with the car. This beautiful Mercedes has been driven very little in recent years, so a major service and maintenance is recommended.
EXTERIOR
The car is finished in the chic colour “Astral Silver Metallic” with a “Royal Blue Leather” interior. It has a hardtop in the same colour as the bodywork. The paintwork is in good condition with minimal signs of wear. The chrome and rubber parts are also in good condition, as are the clear lighting units. Underneath the car are 15-inch alloy wheels with Michelin tyres that still have good tread.
INTERIOR
The interior is beautifully finished in a stylish blue colour with inlaid wood. In addition to the leather upholstery, the rest of the interior is covered in blue velour with white headlining. Comfortable options include electric windows and mirrors, centre armrest, rear window heating, climate control (air conditioning) and the original Becker Grand Prix radio. The leather is free of cracks and the rest is also in good condition. The car is versatile to drive, making it ideal for touring and holidays thanks to its high level of comfort. But sporty drivers will also get their money's worth, as with 204 hp and excellent handling characteristics, the car is nimble and agile. Many people are unaware that the C107 (coupé) had a successful racing career. In short, a timeless beauty in exceptional condition that would be an asset to any collection or car enthusiast.
TECHNICAL
On the technical side, a number of things have recently been done to the car: the fuel pump, fuel filter and mounting kit, including pressure control valve, were replaced in 2025. Furthermore, the idle valve has been replaced and a Bilstein steering damper has been fitted. Various suspension rubbers have been replaced. The battery was also renewed in 2025. The car starts, drives and brakes well. Under the bonnet of this model is a 5.6-litre V8 engine. This engine produces around 230 hp and 373 Nm of torque. The engine is linked to a 4-speed automatic gearbox, which shifts smoothly. The dark roar from the large V8 produces an impressive yet refined sound.
GENERAL
With 18 years of production, the Mercedes-Benz SL R107 is the longest-running series produced by Mercedes (after the G-Class) from 1971 to 1989. That says something about the success of the model. It had to be a worthy successor to the W113 Pagoda, which in turn was the successor to the legendary W198 300 SL. During its production run, the R107 was the only convertible available from Mercedes and was available with various engines ranging from a 2.8-litre 6-cylinder to a 5.6-litre V8. The 560 stands for the 5.6-litre capacity of the engine, a V8. Less than 50,000 of these were produced, and they were only available on the American, Japanese and Australian markets. A nice visual detail of the car are the ribbed rear lights: these were developed to prevent dirt from getting in and to keep the lighting optimal. In terms of safety, the car was ahead of its time: it is equipped with crumple zones and a reinforced windscreen to protect the occupants in the event of a rollover. The R107 SL remains a timeless, reliable and sought-after classic.
