The Dodge Polara is an automobile introduced in the United States for the 1960 model year as Dodge's top-of-the-line full-size car. Following the introduction of the Dodge Custom 880 in 1962, the Polara name signified a step down from Dodge's most luxurious model; the Polara was downsized that year to what was essentially a mid-size car. Dodge used the Polara name in its various trims until 1973, when its position in the Dodge lineup was taken over by the Dodge Monaco.

The name Polara refers to the Polaris star, a marketing ploy to capitalize on the excitement surrounding the space race of the early 1960s.

For the 1965 model year, Chrysler returned the Polara to the Chrysler C platform, which was shared with Chrysler and Plymouth models. The Polara, again offered in a full range of body styles (sedans, hardtops, station wagons, etc.), effectively replaced the 880 and remained a step below the Custom 880. The previous mid-size Dodges, sold under the names Polara 500, Polara, 440, and 330, continued in production under the Dodge Coronet name, with their wheelbases shortened to 117 inches (2,972 mm). These Polaras were criticized for their poor fuel economy; owners of cars with a 383 cu in (6.3 L) engine averaged 13.8 mpg-US (17.0 L/100 km; 16.6 mpg-imp).[6]

In the 1966 model year, the Monaco replaced the Custom 880 as the mid-size model, while a new Monaco 500 replaced the 1965 Monaco. The 1967 models received a facelift, and the hardtop coupe received a semi-fastback roofline with a slanted rear quarter window. The 1967 models featured a new, government-mandated safety package with an energy-absorbing steering column and safety steering wheel, less obtrusive dashboard controls, more interior trim, and a dual-circuit brake master cylinder. The 1968 model year added front shoulder belts and side marker lights to complement the 1967 safety features.

A consistent feature of the 1965 through 1968 models was the angular styling, which was updated each model year. From 1965 through 1970, the Polara was the only full-size Dodge available as a convertible in the US.

The Dodge Polara presented here has been completely restored. Under the hood, we see the 440 cc engine, which runs beautifully and has a very strong response. The interior is also fantastic.
