Comprehensively body-restored coupé, according to the owner, completely stripped to bare metal. Numerous mechanical components, chassis parts, and the interior have reportedly been renewed or overhauled. Distinctive details such as Alpina wheels and a Becker Europa II radio underline the car’s period character. The existing ASI-CRS certification underscores its status as a collectible classic—corresponding documentation is said to be available from the seller.
The BMW 2800 CS marked the debut of the legendary E9 series in 1968, introducing a coupe silhouette that still stands as the epitome of BMW’s late-1960s design. Developed by Karmann, the CS featured BMW’s inline-six “M30” engine, frameless doors, and an elegant roofline—blending sporting spirit and prestige. Technically, the 2800 CS closely resembled the later 3.0 CSi flagship, but with carbureted engines and a more purist configuration. The E9 series laid the foundation for BMW’s international motorsport success. Period sources frequently highlight the CS’s road-holding, balance, and grand touring capability.
According to the owner, the body was fully stripped, repaired, and professionally rebuilt in Turin. All chrome parts are said to have been refinished by the renowned firm CROMALT. The original color combination cannot be verified due to a lack of documents. The period-correct Alpina wheels and new tires enhance the authentic appearance.
The interior was reportedly rebuilt from scratch, including wood trim, dashboard, headliner, and carpets. Seats and door panels are described as restored. The classic Becker Europa II radio and a Nardi sport steering wheel create a true period atmosphere.
The engine reportedly underwent a comprehensive overhaul: carburetors, water and fuel pumps, filters, belts, distributor, spark plugs, thermostat, and hoses were renewed. Suspension bushings, joints, Bilstein dampers, complete exhaust system, battery, and lights were also replaced. The brakes front and rear were serviced, and the clutch (Sachs) replaced. There are currently no independent technical inspection reports available.
No verified information regarding initial registration, previous owners, or this specific car’s ownership history is currently available. According to the seller, only about 200 km have been driven since restoration. The car is equipped with an Italian CRS-ASI certificate; documentation is reportedly available on request.
According to the seller, numerous photos and documents on the restoration process are available and can be provided upon request. An original jack and a box of spare parts are included.
With its authentically restored appearance, period-correct details, and comprehensive overhaul, this 2800 CS appeals above all to enthusiasts of first-series BMW coupes. Due to incomplete documentation, a final assessment of collector value is not possible. However, the ASI certification, its well-maintained technical state, and solid foundation make this CS a desirable example of the late 1960s era.
Restored BMW E9s often create memorable moments on the road: This example impresses at first glance with its lines and the interplay of classic elegance and sporting spirit. I recall the fascination when a freshly rebuilt M30 comes alive—few inline-sixes sound as cultivated as in a CS. Experiencing the coupe in person explains why the E9 models continue to move collectors and enthusiasts to this day.
