Volkswagen once described the Karmann Ghia as “A Volkswagen for people who can’t stand the sight of a Volkswagen.” A tongue-in-cheek statement, yet not without truth. While it shared much of its mechanical foundation with the beloved Beetle — the chassis, gearbox, and reliable air-cooled engine — the Karmann Ghia projected something entirely different: style, grace, and a touch of Italian flair.

That flair came courtesy of Carrozzeria Ghia, the renowned Turin-based design house responsible for the car’s elegant bodywork. Assembly took place by hand at Karmann’s coachbuilding factory in Osnabrück, Germany. The result was a car that combined German solidity with Italian passion — a union that continues to make the Karmann Ghia irresistible today.

When first introduced in 1955, the Karmann Ghia was powered by a 1200 cc engine. By 1966 — the model year of this particular example — the new 1300 engine had become standard. It delivered more power, greater smoothness, and yet retained that unmistakable air-cooled sound. Turn the key and you’ll hear it immediately: that lively hum, as if the car itself is eager to drive.
