Description

Hereby I am selling my original 1988 Toyota Hilux diesel double cab with 167xxx km. In my opinion, this is the best Hilux platform ever made, thanks to its solid axles and incredibly strong build. It is truly an enthusiast’s car, and I am selling it with a heavy heart.

I am the second owner of this vehicle. The first owner was from the Netherlands and bought it new in 1988. I purchased the car in 2024. It has always been stored indoors, both with the first owner and with me. Before I bought it, it had hardly been driven for about 10 years.

Because of this, I renewed a lot mechanically, and this Hilux is now in excellent condition.

The body is completely original, original paint, never restored. There are a few small dents, the bed is in used condition, but that’s normal for these trucks. The rest of the body is really very good, with no rust at all. You don’t find these trucks anymore in such original condition, so well maintained with low mileage. The previous owner also had an anti-rust coating applied.

The engine is a 2L diesel, 2.4-liter naturally aspirated (no turbo). Completely original, never tampered with, never opened. Runs perfectly, always starts, and runs very smoothly. The low mileage is obvious when you drive it.

The interior is in excellent condition. There is one small damage near the temperature control button, but otherwise it’s in top shape and everything works. I imported Black Duck seat covers from Australia because I consider them a must-have. They weren’t cheap, but they are extremely durable and look great with the brown interior. The seats underneath are also in excellent condition, and this way they will stay that way.

Mechanical work done:
I tackled everything that showed even the slightest sign of wear. The vehicle works perfectly, everything functions, no leaks. I’ve driven 7,000 km since the following work was carried out:

  • Suspension: full Old Man Emu kit (including steering damper), shocks, leaf springs, shackles… Drives perfectly, straight and stable.
  • Gearbox: professionally rebuilt. Mechanic said it looked like new, but one clip was missing, so I chose to do a rebuild.
  • Clutch: Terrain Tamer heavy-duty clutch plates (the previous clutch plates were still good and are included).
  • Timing belt and water pump replaced.
  • Brakes:
    • Rear drum brakes fully rebuilt (Terrain Tamer)
    • New brake lines
    • New brake master cylinder
  • Swivel hub rebuild (Terrain Tamer), complete rebuild including bearings, seals, etc.
  • AVM freewheeling hubs – I really wanted these, since it originally didn’t have freewheeling hubs.
  • New thermostat.
  • All belts replaced with new ones.
  • Tires: Falken Wildpeak Mud Terrain (31”), 7,000 km driven.
  • Radio: slightly more modern unit with Bluetooth installed, plus new speakers.
  • Of course, all oils have been replaced. Engine oil changed every 5,000 km.

The truck is 37 years old. It is not a new vehicle, but it is in completely original condition. The body, chassis, and axles have never been resprayed or touched up. For its age, it is in amazingly good condition.

I bought this Hilux to take on trips, which I did, including a great 7,000 km adventure. But with family expansion plans, we are looking for something bigger to camp with. This truck is my favorite 4x4, and in Europe it is the last Hilux with a solid front axle.
