Description

This beautifully presented, fully rebuilt Swallow Doretti was formerly part of the largest known privately owned collection of British classic cars in the world, the James Hull Collection. In 2014, the collection of 543 British classic cars were sold to Jaguar Land Rover for an estimated £100 Million. Our Swallow Doretti was then looked after by Jaguar Classic Works and displayed in the British Motor Museum in Gaydon prior to going back into private ownership.

In 30 years of selling classic cars this is the second Swallow Doretti we have owned, the first one being earlier this year that sold off the market to a collector. Only 276 examples were ever manufactured, and it is reported 75-80 still exist, with around 25 in the UK. This is an exceptionally rare car, and one that has been rebuilt to the very highest of standards during the early 2000's. The Swallow Doretti was built at Walsall in Staffordshire by the Swallow Coachbuilding Company (1935) Ltd. The Company were part of the William Lyons' empire that specialised in building motorcycle sidecars, another Lyons company was Swallow Sidecars who made the ‘SS' cars that adopted the Jaguar name post war. After WWII William Lyons sold the firm to Tube Investments and as the Company were facing a declining market for sidecars, Swallow used its spare capacity to launch the Doretti sportscar in 1954, aimed at the California market.

The Swallow is a beautiful design, a stylish two seater roadster with a bespoke chassis and body clothed in aluminium outer body panels supplied by Panelcraft. The Swallow Doretti used the Triumph TR2 engine and running gear and being built with a wider longer chassis than the TR2, the Doretti handled more securely and had more refinements to include heater and fitted luggage. Five cars per week were being built by the Walsall workforce and it is known that the styling was borrowed from the Ferrari 166MM Barchetta and the name, Doretti was an Italian derivation of the first name of Dorothy Dean, a California Triumph distributor. The Doretti offered 100mph performance and the car sold well in California where its hand built exclusivity had huge appeal. Over half the production went for export and one of the cars top rivals was William Lyons Jaguar XK120 so pressure was on from Jaguar to axe the Doretti with the threat to look elsewhere for components they supplied to Jaguar. The Company complied and production ceased in 1955 with 276 cars built.

Our car, PCD 514 was built in late 1954, first registered in Sussex in March 1955 and was subject of a 10 year total strip down and full restoration that was completed in around 2008. The Swallow was taken right back to the chassis which was epoxy coated, floors were replaced and the aluminium body was completely re-furbished and then re-painted in what we believe to be the original colour. All the chrome work was renewed and the interior completely re-trimmed. The Swallow also had a brand new hood, tonneau and sidescreens, and a new set of spline hubs, chrome wire wheels and spinners. Approaching fifteen years on since the rebuild, the Swallow has covered over 3000 miles and still presents superbly as expected with the low mileage and time spent on display at the British Motor Museum.

Mechanical work included rebuilding the gearbox and overdrive unit, the Swallow had a new wiring loom, dynamo and regulator, the starter motor was re-conditioned, a new stainless steel exhaust fitted and the radiator re-cored. The engine was checked and reported to be in excellent condition, and in the condition of a low mileage, very well maintained engine. Excellent performance, impressive oil pressure and reliable motoring all indicate this was a superbly well executed restoration and a car that can be driven and enjoyed with absolute confidence. This is a rare, sought after British sportscar in a fantastic colour combination, and has provenance of being part of one of the largest collections in the World. These exquisite cars must be seen and driven to be appreciated, and we are delighted to now own our second Swallow Doretti, a rare motor car that has played its part in British motoring history.
