If you’re after a no-nonsense, go-anywhere, grin-on-your-face kind of machine, allow us to introduce the Suzuki Samurai - a pint-sized adventurer with a giant personality and a soft top just begging to be dropped. Born in an era when off-roading meant manual gear levers and the occasional scraped knuckle, the Samurai charged into the spotlight as one of the most capable and charming small 4x4s ever built. Inspired by Suzuki’s tough-as-nails LJ and SJ series, the Samurai did everything a full-size SUV could - just with half the size, half the weight, and double the fun.
And this particular gem? Not only is it the special canvas-top edition, but it’s also the ultra-rare commercial variant - meaning it packs a folding rear bench that transforms it into a beach buggy, family hauler, and mountain goat all in one. Drop the top and suddenly you’re not just driving - you’re smiling. Hard. Or throw a cooler in the back, round up a few friends, and suddenly it’s a beach run with beers and bad karaoke - Samurai style.
Chassis number VSE0SJJ4C00123002 rolled out of the factory in striking Polar White (code 26U), dressed to impress in the rare factory Squiggle Gradient graphics package - yes, that glorious splash of '90s purple and pink. First registered in October 1993, it spent most of its life in the Netherlands before heading to Belgium, where its excellent body and sparkling paint prove just how kind the climate has been.
With just 126,593 km under its belt, the paint still gleams, the body is arrow-straight, and the patina? Just enough to give it swagger. Inside, it’s surprisingly plush. Bolstered black leather seats with funky cloth inserts hug you in just the right way, while the dash, switches, and rich black steering wheel all shout, “I've been loved!” The beige and black canvas tops are in great shape too - ready for sun, rain, or whatever your road trip throws at it.
This little Samurai has been pampered like a purebred terrier. The fully stamped service book and original manuals are tucked neatly into their faux-leather pouch. There's even a Carpass covering more than 20 years of its life story!
Driving this Suzuki Samurai is like strapping yourself into a backpack with wheels and telling the world, “Let’s go get dirty!” It’s not about speed. It’s about fun, top-down, mud-on-your-face kind of fun. Twist the key and the little 1.3-liter engine immediately whirs to life like a puppy tugging at the leash. With a smooth and faultless powerband it not only sounds happy, it feels it. Put the five-speed shifter into gear and just like that, you’re off - chasing adventure like it owes you money.
On pavement, it’s raw, rowdy but so much fun. The ride is stiff but communicative. The steering can keep the big knobbly off-road tires in check and the spartan leaf springs ride surprisingly well over tarmac. And off-road? That’s where it really starts grinning. Short wheelbase, solid axles, real 4WD with low range - this thing was born for dirt. It’s 63 horsepower strong powerplant is more than strong enough to climb, crawl, splash, and scramble its way over just about anything, all while looking like a toy that accidentally came to life. You don’t just go off-roading in a Samurai - you go on safari, you blaze trails and you wave at the larger Jeeps from the summit.
Want to feel like a kid again, but with a driver’s license this time? This Samurai is waiting for you at RNR Classics. Come take it for a spin - you’ll leave with mud on your tires and a smile that lasts all week.
