Description

The Canvas: Porsche 928, Model Year 1978

The first-generation Porsche 928 is regarded as an automotive milestone. It was Porsche’s first transaxle model, featuring a front-mounted 4.5-liter V8 and a rear-mounted transmission, intended to lead the brand into a new era. It remains the only sports car ever named European Car of the Year. At the end of the 1970s, the 928 was seen as a futuristic Gran Turismo with a particularly clean design in its spoiler-less first series. Subtle, muscular – calm, flowing surfaces practically calling for color. In short: this car is the perfect canvas for Pop Art.

Transformation into the Porsche 928 Art Car – Attraction through Contrasts

In the art world, Pop Art stands for contemporary motifs rooted in consumer culture, often executed with clear outlines reminiscent of classic comic style. A stark contrast to the clean and timeless lines of the 928. The golden 8-spoke Minilite-style wheels set the tone: instead of subtle finesse, the 928 now wears adornment – not pretentious, but playful.

Renowned artist Christian Rott decorated the 1970s dream car with countless unmistakable motifs. On the hood, Batman leads the way, flanked by an emphatic “POW!” – a comic exclamation capturing the V8’s energy in a speech bubble. TAG Heuer forms a bridge to motorsport, while the Michelin Man promises grip with a grin. A little further on, Snoopy lies comfortably, with Woodstock perched on him.

And that is only the beginning. Tweety waits at the transition to the fender as if he has already found the perfect racing line. Nearby appear Peter Griffin and Quagmire from Family Guy – figures echoing modern pop culture. The contrast between the 928’s technocratic seriousness and the playful artwork creates its unique visual tension.

Every surface of the aerodynamic grand tourer is filled with small works of art. Classic and modern comic characters sit next to cigarette advertising or logos from the world of motorsport. Champion and Magneti Marelli meet Mickey Mouse, Kermit the Frog, Popeye, Elmo, Gulf and Motul.

The result is a tour that never repeats itself. Each time you walk around the car, something new catches your eye. The paint becomes a stage – open to film, television, advertising, comics, motorsport. Pop Art as a living collage. Small details like Woody Woodpecker on the wheel center caps appear as if he is pecking at the apex. The individual motifs seem to interact with each other.

More than Show – Boxer Motors’ Porsche 928 Art Car is Technically Solid

Beneath the artwork lies a thoroughly renewed heart. The Stuttgart V8 has been completely overhauled, and the underbody cleaned with dry ice. “When the new owner turns the key, they should feel that this is a properly refurbished car,” emphasizes Schlagenhauf. New seals, freshly reupholstered interior in original materials, carefully adjusted mechanical components – this 928 Art Car is no museum exhibit but a statement meant to be driven.

Sesame Street, The Muppet Show and Chupa Chups – Together for Children’s Cancer Aid in Tübingen

On the right side, Bart Simpson joins Lisa – two generations from a series exploring growing up and contradiction. Scrooge McDuck peeks around the corner, as if asking what value truly means: material investment or doing good. Bugs Bunny and Superman crown the side: cleverness and ideals – both needed to transform a failed restoration into a shining project.

Batman on one corner, the Muppets on another, Sesame Street elsewhere… On the roof, Kermit watches over the scene – as if the interior color had been mirrored upward. These connections give structure to the collage: repetitions, reflections, small visual anchors – woven into a net of memories and playful references. Memories of Saturday-morning cartoons, of old advertising posters.

Schlagenhauf and Christian Rott wanted to transform material input into something meaningful – attention, joy, help. They chose Kinderkrebshilfe Tübingen e.V., an organization near Boxer Motor providing vital support for seriously ill children. Auction house Humer & Granner waives all auction fees for this online auction – a rare harmony of idealism and professionalism.

The Porsche 928 Becomes a Charity Art Car

This context adds a second layer to the Pop Art on the bodywork. The brand logos are not mere advertising quotations; they become connectors. They resonate with people who might not care about cars but grew up with pop icons. They spark a conversation about value and values – and ultimately about the value of helping.
