Mini Cooper E – Classic Shape, Electric Soul (1996/2023)
An electric original Mini? Why not. One of the most influential cars of the 20th century, reborn as a thoroughly contemporary electric motorcar. The brilliance of it lies in this: you need sacrifice neither the cultishly compact original Mini silhouette nor the enjoyment of a genuinely potent power unit.
The idea was conceived by a British Mini enthusiast who, with the support of a Swiss team of experts, designed and built this project. Over the course of three years, and with an investment of more than CHF 80,000, a highly professional one-off was created, receiving Swiss MFK approval in December 2023.
The team used a 1996 Mini as the foundation, renewing the sills and floor panels. To ensure the safe integration of the batteries, the body shell was structurally modified and a dedicated water-cooling system for the EV components was installed. The suspension is height-adjustable and the steering benefits from electric power assistance. Inside, the new owner will find a fresh leather interior and a Panasonic multimedia system, naturally equipped with Bluetooth and DAB radio.
The 54 kW motor offers three driving modes: Eco, Standard and Sport. And yes – it is still shifted (!) using the original gearbox. With a range of approximately 120 km (depending on driving style), this Mini is well suited to everyday use. For those who wish to go further, a third battery can be retrofitted to extend the range even more.
Comprehensive documentation covering the car’s history and conversion, as well as a handbook, are included. Anyone looking for a compact classic with the desire to drive electrically will be hard pressed to find anything better than this Mini-e.
