Description

We have the pleasure to offer this genuine 1965 Shelby GT350 with VIN Nr SFM5S112 for sale.

Only 562 examples were built of the early 1965 cars (identified by the 5S in the VIN Nr) which are sought after and carry a premium over the later 1966 cars.

Our car was one of five Shelby GT350 used for Public Relations in 1965 after which it was converted to R specification and used on local US-racetracks since the early 70ies (logbook is with the car). Its Ford and Shelby numbers are matching and 5S112 has continuous ownership from new and is very well documented. For a more detailed history and excerpt from the Shelby Registry, please see the History section below.

After its restoration (retaining its R race spec) by renown Cobra Automotive of Wallingford, Connecticut, 5S112 made its debut at Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion in 2015. Acquired by its current U.S. owner in 2022, the car was sent back to Cobra Automotive for a mechanical restoration. Today, 5S112 is in outstanding condition and has always been maintained with no expense spared. In addition to racing at Velocity International (Sonoma, U.S.A.), the car also successfully participated in both the 2023 and 2025 edition of Le Mans Classic where it was supported by Belgian preparer MecAuto. The car is located in Belgium with a USA carnet ATA.
All date-related elements (fuel cell, seat, belts, fire system) are current and its FIA HTP is valid until the end of 2033. In addition to being road registered, 5S112 comes with extensive spares including 4 spare wheels and a complete gearbox. (detailed spares list is available on request).

1965 Shelby GT350 in racing specification rarely come to market and, with its continuous history, excellent provenance and documentation, 5S112 is truly an exceptional road- and race-ready GT350 eligible for all pre-1966 races and rallys such as Tour Auto and Cento Ore Modena.

An early Shelby Mustang, SFM 5S112 was ordered In December 1964 and was completed on May 6, 1965. Days later it was shipped to Ford's "Glass House" headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan along with four other 1965 GT350s and four Cobras, all at the request of Ford's Shelby American liaison, Ray Geddes. Howard C. Pardee, 1965 and 1966 GT350 Registrar of the Shelby American Automobile Club, confirmed SS112 was used by Ford for "Public Relations" duties. Those testing Ford's must have thoroughly enjoyed the performance of 5S112 - it was returned to Shelby American just four months later needing a complete engine rebuild. Just 1000 miles were on the odometer, and Hi-Performance Motors of Los Angeles charged $343.93 for the warranty work.

Late In 1965 5S112 was sold to Hank Smith, who converted it to Shelby's "R" specifications, obtaining Its SCCA Logbook in 1971. The first Shelby Mustangs were bred for racing, with 36 GT350R racers created (including two prototypes), but SCCA rules required at least 100 street versions be produced. Except for the GT350R's roll bar and race-ready engine, the 1965 GT350 was literally a race car for the street. With so few GT350Rs available. it was not uncommon for a GT350 to be converted to R-spec. Smith and subsequent owners raced 5S112 for the next eight years. It was restored by vintage race specialists Cobra Automotive of Wallingford, Connecticut to FIA Historic and HMSA standards, and made its debut at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in 2015. But 5S112 is also registered for street use, and both front seats are retained. Historic "Public Relations" car and long-time 8-Production racer, this Shelby is truly a unique road-and-race ready GT350.
