Description

1964 Ford Mustang Group 2 powered by the 4.7L V8 producing 400 bhp

The Ford Mustang is a series of American automobiles manufactured by Ford. In continuous production since 1964, the Mustang is currently the longest-produced Ford car nameplate. The Ford Mustang began production five months before the normal start of the 1965 production year. The early production versions are often referred to as "1964½ models", but all Mustangs were advertised, VIN coded and titled by Ford as 1965 models, though minor design updates in August 1964 at the formal start of the 1965 production year contribute to tracking 19641⁄2 production data separately from 1965 data.

The Ford Mustang which we are offering here today was restored in Stolberg between 2012 and 2014 by the renowned American Muscle Motorsports & Services for a customer who wanted to take part in the Tour Auto in France. For other reasons, he did not take part and sold the car to its current owner. The Shelby Team car from the 1966 Trans Am Championship was used as the inspiration for this Mustang. They replicated this Mustang so well that they even painted the underside red and did not install the centre caps on the wheels. It is all in the details… The homologation for this car is 1330, so it is a Group 2 touring car, which was built for the period F (62-65). Even though she was built for the racetrack, she comes with current German registration to drive on the street as a classic car.

The bodyshell of a very early 1964 Ford Mustang coupé served as the basis for this "project", which was completely exposed and sandblasted. The bodywork was stiffened at certain points and the interior features a fully welded six-point roll cage with FIA certificate has been installed in the interior. Other interior upgrades include a power steering conversion, Cobra bucket seats, Willans harnesses, Stewart Warner gauges, etc.

At the heart of this touring car is a Ford 289 V8 small block with a displacement of 4728cc, which, according to the restorer, delivers around 400 bhp thanks to numerous upgrades such as AFR Cylinder heads, Holley 600 Double Pumper carburetor, Aluminium roller rockers, etc. For cooling she is fitted with an upgraded cooling system and oil cooler. And after having driven her, we do really believe it. Mated to this incredible engine is a race-ready  manual Top Loader 4-speed gearbox with a Hurst shifter. Power is sent through a Currie rear axle with a limited slip differential to the road. For traction she is running semi-slick tyres wrapped around the iconic American Racing Torque Thrust wheels. Other upgrades include heavy duty sway bars, reinforced suspension components, etc.

With all of this power, she also has to stop well. Therefore she has been fitted with Bud 4 pistons callipers in the front and 10” drum brakes in the rear.

Together with the low weight of just 1230 kg, this results in impressive driving performance. We have had many Mustangs in the past, but this one is truly special. You will not come across such an amazing driving experience as in this one.
