1963 | FIAT 500 D

A low mileage example of Fiat’s perennially loved 500 in its most desirable form as a 500D, with Trasformabile full convertible bodywork and rear hinged ‘suicide’ doors.

The history file, which contains Italian documentation back to Day 1, shows that this baby Fiat was first registered in the chic ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites, on 12th March, 1963. Documentation also confirms that the car was still in the same ownership some two decades later and even in 2014, was living only a short distance from Cortina. Long term ownership no doubt goes some way to explaining both the low mileage of c78,563 km (48,709 miles) and the exceptional condition. Of some note in this regard is the entirely original and quite superb interior trim.

From detailed photographs in the history file, it is clear that this has always been an extremely sound example. However, in 2014, a light cosmetic renovation was undertaken to a very high standard, the result so impressive that prior to importation into the UK in 2014, this car was awarded the ASI Gold standard plaque in its native Italy. Works essentially extended to a bare metal repaint and a comprehensive mechanical overhaul, which included an engine strip and rebuild. Photographs of these works are in the extensive history file.

Since these renovations, this Trasformabile has been part of a small but select collection and has seen only sparing use and then only in fine weather, covering a nominal 600 km (just under 400 miles) between 2014 and 2020. Consequently the car remains in a condition to place it firmly as one of the very best examples of its type anywhere.
