1941 Bedford MWD 15 CWT Lorry
Description
The Bedford MW 15 CWT lorry was a versatile military vehicle used primarily by British forces during World War II. The truck was designed for a wide range of logistical and transport duties, proving crucial in the transportation of troops, ammunition, equipment, and supplies across various terrains. The MWD was a cargo lorry with a general service body while 15 CWT indicates a 15-hundredweight (or 750kg) payload capacity. Introduced in the early years of the war, the Bedford MWD 15 CWT was powered by a 3.5 litre, six-cylinder engine, delivering a reliable performance for its time. Despite lacking four-wheel drive and so being unsuited for off-road use, the MW's powerful engine, short wheelbase, low centre of gravity and relatively light weight gave it excellent acceleration and almost sportscar like handling. The Bedford MWD was widely used by the British Army, Royal Air Force, and other allied forces, becoming one of the most iconic military trucks of the era. It was adaptable, often used as a cargo carrier, ambulance, or even as a platform for mounting weapons. Its reliability, combined with its ease of maintenance, made it a staple of military transport throughout the war, continuing to serve well into the post-war period.
This very good Bedford 15 CWT Lorry went into service in 1941 fitted with the MWD general cargo body. Unusually, the spare wheel is mounted within the vehicle which could indicate that it was a radio truck. Owned by the current vendor for several years and used it numerous films, for its most recent roll in SAS Rogue Heros it was painted in Sand. On its return from filming in Morocco our vendor had it returned it back to British Army Green. He used for many years to help Royal British Legion poppy sales and attending D-Day celebrations. Fitted with the correct canvas seats, it still has the gun rack for the two Royal Enfield rifles between the front seats. It has been described by the owner as a very good, reliable runner and is supplied with a V5C registration document. A very versatile vehicle which could attend any type of classic car event or just to go down to the pub in. Consigned by John Tomlin.
