Description

Chassis No. AR601571

During a press event on 9 September 1963, Alfa Romeo introduced the world to the new 105 series coupe at its newly opened Arese production facility. Under the cover was a new Bertone-designed body styled under the direction of the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro. The design drew heavy inspiration from the 2000 / 2600 Sprint, allowing for the distinctive Alfa Romeo styling to shine through while incorporating the revolutionary concept of having the headlights integrated in the grille. The early production cars incorporated a distinctive "scalino" step, earning them the “step nose” nickname with the leading edge of the hood sitting proud over the nose of the car.

According to communications with the Worldwide Alfa Romeo Owners Club, this “step nose” was manufactured on 11 February 1964 in Bluette with a blue interior, selling that same month on 20 February to its original owner in Italy. While much of the car's history is unknown, it was reported to have been overhauled in 2005, when it received new rocker panels in addition to refurbishing the bumpers and refinishing the body in its current Farina Red over Black vinyl color combination. During the same time, the 1,600 cc inline-four fed by twin Weber DCOE 40 side draft carburetors were also overhauled.

The current owner, and former N.A.R.T. employee, purchased the car shortly after it was imported from Greece to the United States in February 2016. Under their ownership, much of the work was completed by them to continually improve the car to the wonderful condition it is in today. Engine performance is improved with new spark plugs and wires with spark metered by a wireless, fully programmable 123ignition system that features a Bluetooth-enabled distributor. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a lightweight flywheel installed mated to an upgraded GTA pressure plate along with a first gear synchronizer on the five-speed manual transmission with lightened gears by B & A Transmission Repair of Danbury, Connecticut, in 2019. The wheels have been upgraded to 15 inch, GTA-style wheels sourced from Alfaholics that are shod in 195/55 BFGoodrich G-Force Sport Comp-2 tires. The Dunlop brake system was reported to have been overhauled in 2017 with refurbished front calipers, a new master cylinder, rear wheel cylinders, and brake pads. The suspension is said to have been overhauled with period-correct Koni shocks and upgraded with Alfaholic's adjustable upper control arms. The current owner affixed a N.A.R.T. sticker to the rear of the car as a reminder of the time they spent working there and a testament to the quality of craftsmanship that went into building this example.

A fetching example of Giorgetto Giugiaro's iconic design, this 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT is fit with numerous upgrades from some of the best marque-specific suppliers, enhancing an already sporting car finished in its classic Farina Red over Black livery.
