History
Puma grew from Rino Malzoni's Brazilian racing programme. The DKW-based GT Malzoni and Puma GT preceded the Volkswagen-powered GT, GTE and open GTS; the larger GTB used Chevrolet Opala running gear. Historic car production ended in the early 1990s after several ownership changes.
Highlights
The appeal is a low-volume fibreglass body over recognisable mechanicals. Production records list about 8,705 GTEs, 7,077 GTSs and only 888 GTB S2s. Treat all old small-series figures as useful context, not a substitute for inspecting a particular car.
Technical Data
Market Overview & Buying Tips
A 1976 GT 1600 sold for €16,900 in 2024 and a 1978 GTE for €17,000; they are genuine comparables, not valuations. A UK buyer will normally be importing a left-hand-drive car. Establish shipping, NOVA, V5C and insurance before committing. Examine the VW-based car's floorpan, frame head, jacking points and battery area; fibreglass does not rust, but it can crack, delaminate and conceal poor repairs. Puma-specific glass, trim and interior parts are harder to source than VW service items.
Driving Feel
The GTE is low, light and mechanical, with the air-cooled engine immediately behind its occupants. The GTB is the longer-legged, six-cylinder alternative. Sound tyres, brakes and geometry matter more than claimed tuning.
Design
Early GTEs carry shark-gill side vents; later Brasília-based cars are wider and squarer. Compare lamps and instruments with period photographs because genuine Pumas used Brazilian production-car components.
Summary
Buy a Puma for its Brazilian identity, not merely its Volkswagen parts. Find an example with coherent chassis identity, honest bodywork and a complete import record.
