When the Swiss Army began looking for a successor for some of its ageing off-road vehicles in the late 1980s, it chose a familiar name from neighbouring Austria: the 460/461-series off-roader built by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz. In Switzerland, it did not carry the Mercedes star, but appropriately served as the Puch 230 GE.
Luxury naturally played a secondary role. While the civilian G-Class was increasingly embracing leather, wood and comfort, the military received exactly what it needed: rugged engineering, selectable four-wheel drive, differential locks and a body designed with practical considerations firmly ahead of fashion.
The 230 GE was powered by a 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine from Mercedes-Benz. Around 125 hp may seem modest by today’s standards, but outright speed was hardly at the top of the military requirements list. More important were off-road capability, straightforward operation and the proverbial robustness of the G-Class.
The Swiss vehicles were produced in various configurations and used for troop transport, logistics and specialised duties. Their practical equipment and military-specific details clearly distinguish them from their civilian counterparts.
This 230 GE was retired from service by the Swiss Army’s Logistics Base in November 2021. The off-roader had already made its way to Germany at the beginning of 2021. The consignor subsequently commissioned an extensive refinement of the well-preserved 230 GE: an Alcantara interior with stitching in the exterior colour, extending not only throughout the cockpit but also into the passenger compartment. The suspension was raised, while the wheels were painted black, creating a striking contrast with the ice-blue paintwork.
The result is an exceptionally cool Puch G that is guaranteed to attract attention and spark plenty of conversation.
