Pre-war racing car built to compete at Le Mans
It left the factory in 1933 as a rolling chassis. It received a body and mechanical modifications with the intention of competing in LeMans. It has an engine with increased parameters and an individually built body with a racing shape. Prepared in France in the lightweight voiturette class. The car was in one hands for many years (from 1951 to 2020), which allowed it to be preserved in excellent condition.
This Singer Nine Sports Special has an individual, aerodynamic body, which was built at the very beginning of its life in France by the Lemaitre company. It has an engine built at that time according to racing specifications, with an additional shaft support, a modified camshaft, increased compression and dual carburetors, which allowed to increase the power from the factory 26 HP to over 40 HP. It is a four-cylinder, overhead valve engine, which, considering the weight of the car is about 750 kg, gave it above-average performance.
These cars were used eagerly in the 1930s at Le Mans - there is a documented start of 21 Singers in the years 1933-1939 in the class up to 1000 cm³ and one victory in the class of the Barnes/Langley pair in 1935. This copy did not start in Le Mans and although it was supposedly built with this intention, the driver's wife decided to bomb this idea and banned it from starting. A memento of those times is the original color of the car (racing blue - the national color of French racing cars).
Although the documentation from the early years of its history has not been preserved, the one that exists from 1951 to 2020 is impressive. Throughout all these years, Singer was in the hands of a Dutch professor, Maurice Elzas. He tried to delve into the history of the car, for a number of years he was involved in the development and renovation of many of its elements, and extensive correspondence with many specialists has been preserved, including the Singer factory and the Le Mans 24 Hours race office. There is even a printout from the dynamometer, which confirms the final power of the car.
We purchased the car in the first half of 2024 in the Netherlands at Gallery Aaldering. The car was optically preserved in a beautiful and highly original condition, although it was impossible to start it.
Over the following months, we performed all the necessary work on it. We made corrections to the electrical system, rebuilt the carburetors, rebuilt the brake system and reconstructed the fuel tank.
It is currently fully functional. It starts, drives, brakes beautifully, is full of energy and sounds wonderful.
