This 1932 Riley Brooklands 9 comes from a different era, a time when everything was mechanical and analog. A Grand Prix in the 1930s did not begin with a group of engineers studying computer screens. Someone gave the starting signal, and from that moment on, your only task was to be faster than everyone else. This is a compact British sports car with a remarkable Australian racing history, supported by period photographs, historical documents, and a complete photographic record of its restoration.
The Brooklands evolved from the Riley Nine, introduced in 1926 with Percy Riley’s strikingly advanced four-cylinder engine. The engine proved to be an excellent foundation for competition. J.G. Parry-Thomas and Reid Railton recognized its potential and developed a lightweight racing car that achieved immediate success at Brooklands. Riley then decided that customers should be able to buy one as well.
The car received a significantly shorter chassis than the standard Riley Nine and was built so low that the driver could almost touch the ground while seated. You sit only inches above the pavement. And that pavement has a habit of disappearing beneath you rather quickly. The Brooklands engine featured, among other upgrades, revised camshafts, higher compression, a modified exhaust system, and twin carburetors. In a small, lightweight sports car from 1932, with no modern safety features and your elbow practically outside the bodywork, around 50 horsepower probably felt like an excellent reason to check once more that your helmet was securely fastened.
This particular example was exported to Australia, where it competed during the 1930s at the Lobethal circuit. It was a long road circuit winding through the rolling hills of South Australia. Fast, spectacular, and by no means forgiving. The course ran along public roads, through villages, and past trees, houses, and numerous other obstacles you would rather not inspect too closely if something went wrong. In 1939, the 14-kilometer circuit hosted the Australian Grand Prix and was the longest circuit ever used for the event up to that time. The winner averaged approximately 135 km/h (84 mph). In a pre-war racing car, on ordinary public roads. That required no small measure of courage.
The history of this Riley has been researched extensively by its previous owners. Photographs from its competition years have been preserved and, together with later documentation, provide a fascinating record of the car’s life. The complete restoration was also carefully documented—from its days on Australian race circuits to the meticulous reconstruction that returned this Brooklands to its present condition.
During its own era, the Riley Brooklands established itself as a formidable competitor in the class up to 1,100 cc. The model achieved success in major events, including the Ulster Tourist Trophy, while Riley claimed the Rudge-Whitworth Cup at Le Mans in 1934 with the Brooklands.
