A Speedster has always been the 911 for people who feel that a 911 could be just a little purer. Less roof over your head. Less luxury. More sensation.
Porsche revived the Speedster name at the end of the 1980s as a reference to the famous 356 Speedster. Once the 964 generation had arrived, it took another few years before a Speedster version followed. It was announced in the early 1990s, based on the Carrera 2 and fitted as standard with the narrow body.
The familiar low windshield, the distinctive rear cover behind the seats, and the simple soft top give the Speedster an appearance all its own. This is not simply a cabriolet without a roof, but a genuinely separate model with a clearly different character. The amusing part is that, back then, a Speedster was actually cheaper than a Carrera Cabriolet. Today, that sounds almost unimaginable.
In fact, Porsche later even encouraged owners to trade in their Speedsters for a new 911. In hindsight, that is rather amusing, because Speedsters in particular have since become highly sought-after collector cars.
This 1993 example is exactly the kind of Speedster that gets us excited. Delivered new in Germany, driven just 49,000 kilometers, and maintained until quite recently by German Porsche dealers and specialists. The car remains in very attractive and original condition and makes an excellent impression both inside and out.
Finished in Speed Yellow, it is of course anything but shy. And frankly, that suits a Speedster rather well. The bucket seats and yellow accents in the interior complete the look beautifully and give the car precisely that unmistakable 1990s atmosphere that belongs to this model.
The Porsche Classic radio with navigation is also present. Modern usability, while visually remaining in keeping with the original interior. Beneath the surface, of course, you will find the familiar 3.6-liter air-cooled flat-six from the 964 Carrera 2.
The engine runs beautifully, the car drives with reassuring precision, and the entire package feels properly cared for and correct. The bodywork is straight and tidy, while the interior has remained remarkably fresh. Exactly the impression you would want from a car with this mileage and history.
Relatively few 964 Speedsters were built, and for many enthusiasts, the original narrow-body version represents the purest interpretation of the model. Speed Yellow. 49,000 kilometers. German history. And above all: still exactly as it should be.
