When the first “911” was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, it was officially still known as the 901. However, as Peugeot claimed the trademark rights to all three-digit car model designations with a zero in the middle, Porsche was forced to change the name. The result was the 911. The car went on sale in 1964 and featured a 2.0-litre air-cooled engine producing 130 bhp, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds.
The iconic shape of the 911 changed very little between 1963 and 1989. The “classic” 911 has become a legend in its own right and is commonly associated with the F-model (1963–1973) and G-model (1973–1989). The original 911 had a 2.0-litre engine, but displacement gradually increased over the years. The 3.2-litre engine was introduced in 1984 as the successor to the 911 SC, which was powered by a 3.0-litre engine. Porsche extensively reworked the engine, as approximately 80% of the 3.2-litre unit was new. At the time, the Bosch engine management system, featuring electronic fuel injection and ignition, was a major innovation for the 911. Power output consequently rose to an impressive 231 bhp. With this engine, the 911 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 244 km/h. It can achieve 200 km/h in just 26 seconds. Even in this classic form, the car fully lives up to Porsche’s sporting ambitions.
The 911 Cabriolet came with an extensive standard specification, including Fuchs alloy wheels (7 and 8 inches wide), an electrically operated soft top, leather upholstery, a leather sports steering wheel with an extended hub, a heated driver’s seat and electric windows. Quite an impressive specification for a car built in 1986! A more modern Becker radio and a removable wind deflector further enhance the comfort of this 911 Cabriolet.
This 911 Cabriolet was delivered new in Germany in October 1986 and has been registered in the Netherlands since February 1996. During the 1990s, the car was repainted in its current dark blue exterior colour. Upon its import into the Netherlands, the Porsche underwent a pre-purchase inspection by the Porsche dealer Wittebrug, which concluded that the car was in good condition. In the years that followed, the Porsche was maintained by both official dealers and specialists to preserve its condition. The original service booklet accompanies the car and documents a complete, continuous maintenance history from new to the present day.
