An air-cooled 911, a manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive. Sometimes a recipe does not need to be complicated at all to work exceptionally well. This 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet is a perfect example.
The 964 generation represented an important step in the development of the 911 at the end of the 1980s. The shape remained instantly recognizable, but technically far more changed than was immediately apparent. The bumpers were more elegantly integrated, aerodynamics were improved, and beneath the surface the 911 became more modern without losing its original character. And in a Carrera 2 with a manual transmission, that character arguably comes through at its very best.
No all-wheel drive, no automatic transmission, but the classic layout: engine in the rear, power sent to the rear wheels, and the driver doing the work. Exactly the way many enthusiasts prefer their 964.
This Carrera 2 was originally delivered in the United States and has a history in Beverly Hills, including Rodeo Drive. Hardly the worst environment for an open-top Porsche 911. The car has since been converted to European specifications and now resides on this side of the Atlantic. The specification is wonderfully simple: Schwarz.
And not just the bodywork. The entire interior is also finished in Schwarz. Black on black, then, and it works exceptionally well on a 964 Cabriolet. Understated, sporting, and timeless. With the top down, what remains are the classic proportions of the 911, and on this generation they are still beautifully compact. The car makes a neat and well-cared-for impression overall, including the fit of the body panels, while the carpets and dashboard are also very tidy.
The documentation has been carefully preserved as well. The books are present, including the important vehicle identification sticker in the service booklet. The same identification sticker is also still present beneath the luggage-compartment lid. These are reassuring details to see on a Porsche from this period and they contribute positively to the overall impression of the car.
When the car was converted from U.S. to European specification, the odometer was changed from miles to kilometers. The instrumentation now therefore also corresponds with European use. And ultimately, this is above all a 964 that asks to be driven.
The entire car presents as well cared for and tidy, and it feels exactly as a good Carrera 2 should. The manual gearbox, direct steering, air-cooled six-cylinder engine behind you, and open roof turn every drive into something special.
An early morning, top down, the six-cylinder behind you, and then simply drive. Because however interesting the history of the 964 may be, you only truly understand this Porsche once you are behind the wheel.
