Looking at the sheer amount of documentation available for this car, ranging from brochures to magazine articles, from technical manuals to parts catalogues, and from owner’s manuals to wiring diagrams, you would hardly think that this MG Magnette Saloon is a rare classic. Yet this ZB Varitone model, as the facelifted version introduced in 1956 is known, was produced just 36,600 times (source: MG Owners’ Club). The Magnette was the first MG to feature monocoque construction, independent front suspension and a host of other technical innovations. It was widely praised as a spacious, comfortable and luxurious family car. This was at a time when British cars had a very distinctive character, embodying a quintessentially English grandeur for which British marques are still renowned today.

The current owner purchased the car in 1990. In 2000, he embarked on an extensive restoration project that would take more than 20 years to complete. During this time, the car was converted from right-hand drive to left-hand drive, the original engine was replaced with a three-main-bearing MGB 1800 engine, and the gearbox was replaced with a Ford Sierra five-speed transmission. The restoration also provided an opportunity to make the car more modern, safer and more reliable in several respects. Upgrades include front disc brakes, an alternator conversion, electronic ignition, a master battery cut-off switch, a replacement radiator, front seat belts and numerous other improvements. The tyres were replaced in 2025.

All in all, this is a true classic, distinguished by its exceptionally elegant British styling, while concealing thoroughly practical and reliable mechanicals beneath the surface. Since the restoration was completed, the car has covered only approximately 250 miles. The Magnette starts readily, runs smoothly and feels like a delightful companion on the road.
