The 116 series refers to the luxury-class sedans that Daimler-Benz AG introduced to the market starting in September 1972.

With this series, the term “S-Class” was created; Daimler-Benz itself considers the predecessors W 108/W 109 as the true origin of the S-Class. The designation W 116 stands for the sedans, while the long-wheelbase version “SEL” is referred to as V 116.

The successor model was the 126 series introduced in September 1979. Some models of the 116 series continued to be produced until September 1980.

Development of the W 116 series began in 1966. The goal was maximum comfort combined with previously unattainable passive safety. Technical director Hans Scherenberg was in charge. In 1971, the German Association of the Automotive Industry canceled the IAA passenger car show. As a result, the new model was not presented until September 25, 1972, at the Costa Brava in Spain.

The new design language was anticipated by the R 107, which had already been presented in April 1971. The W 116 was significantly longer, wider, lower, and less delicate in design than its predecessor: safety aspects were incorporated into both the interior and exterior design. The car was tested in a wind tunnel, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.41. For the first time, headlights and the radiator grille were arranged horizontally; this design feature continues in all Mercedes models today. Other distinctive features included parallel windshield wipers and a fully padded interior, where all surfaces were padded and controls were recessed. Experience from the Mercedes-Benz ESF (Experimental Safety Vehicles) was incorporated.

The responsible designer was Friedrich Geiger, for the last time. Many design features were later used in other models, especially in the mid-range 123 series introduced in 1975.

Several innovations were introduced with the 116 series. The 96-liter fuel tank was positioned above the rear axle for crash protection, and the four-spoke safety steering wheel was also new. The trunk capacity was 579 liters. In 1978, the W/V 116 became the first car in the world available with an anti-lock braking system, controlled by an electronic analog computer.
