Honda introduced the S2000 in 1999 as part of the celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary. Inspired by legendary Honda roadsters such as the S500, S600 and S800, the S2000 was created to showcase everything the Japanese manufacturer had learned from decades of engineering, motorsport and high-performance engine development. The result was a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car that offered an unusually pure and analogue driving experience.
At the heart of the early S2000 is Honda’s legendary 2.0-litre naturally aspirated VTEC engine. Producing approximately 240 hp without the assistance of a turbocharger, it was one of the most powerful production engines ever made in relation to its capacity. Its extraordinary 9,000-rpm character, combined with a precise six-speed manual gearbox, near-perfect weight distribution and sophisticated double-wishbone suspension, made the S2000 an instant icon. It is a car that rewards its driver with sharp steering, exceptional balance and an engine note that becomes increasingly addictive as the revs rise.
Today, the earliest S2000s are increasingly recognised as modern classics. Their timeless design, exceptional engineering and lack of electronic interference make them very different from most contemporary sports cars. Well-preserved and original examples are becoming difficult to find, especially in attractive colour combinations and with a complete history.
Our S2000 was delivered new in Germany in 2000 and was first registered in Greece in 2004. We discovered and purchased the car in Greece, where it formed part of an exceptional private collection. Finished in timeless black with a striking red leather interior, it has covered only 110,000 kilometres and remains in remarkably original condition.
The car retains its original factory paintwork, apart from the front bumper lip, which we had professionally repainted. It comes complete with its original manuals, service book and tool kit. The car is fitted with KW suspension, accompanied by the corresponding certificate, which gives it an even more precise driving character and a subtly sportier stance.
This is a very honest and authentic early S2000 with a desirable specification, documented provenance and mileage that is remarkably modest for its age. Its condition and level of originality make it suitable not only for the enthusiast who wants to enjoy one of Honda’s finest driver’s cars, but also for the collector looking for a carefully preserved example. An additional set of genuine Volk Racing wheels fitted with new Michelin tyres can also be purchased separately.
