The Austin A125 Sheerline was introduced in 1947 as the prestigious flagship of the British manufacturer Austin. With its imposing appearance, refined finish and powerful six-cylinder engine, the model appealed to the same clientele as prestigious British luxury marques such as Bentley and Rolls-Royce. Most examples were delivered as stately saloons or limousines, although a small number of chassis received exclusive bodies from independent coachbuilders.
This 1949 example is a truly unique creation by the renowned Brussels-based coachbuilder Vesters & Neirinck. Active from 1926 to 1956, the company was celebrated for its elegant, high-quality coachwork on prestigious chassis from manufacturers such as Minerva, Delage and Bentley. This Austin was specially commissioned by Désiré Gillet, associated with the famous Belgian motorcycle manufacturer Gillet-Herstal. Its exceptional four-door convertible body was built only once, making this car a genuine one-of-one example.
Particularly intriguing is its possible connection to King Leopold III of Belgium. Several historical photographic descriptions associate this specific Austin with the Belgian monarch, suggesting that it may have been built as a parade car for him. Although this royal connection has not yet been substantiated by official documentation, it remains a fascinating part of the history surrounding this unique automobile. Its exceptional coachwork and Belgian origins add further interest to these historical references.
The distinctive bodywork is characterised by flowing lines, impressive proportions and remarkably elegant styling, reminiscent of exclusive French creations by coachbuilders such as Saoutchik. The original two-tone Black and Royal Blue paintwork remains intact and displays beautiful authentic patina. This original finish is a particularly valuable element of the car's historical character and exclusivity.
Under the bonnet lies the original 3,995 cc inline-six engine, bearing engine number ID 4033. The car therefore retains its matching-numbers engine, an important advantage for collectors. Both the engine and carburettors have been fully overhauled in the past. The manual gearbox is also original. Its left-hand-drive configuration further highlights the distinctive Belgian origins of this exclusive Austin.
The car was originally imported into Belgium, where it received its unique coachwork. It later spent time in France, where it was exhibited in a museum. Its historical significance was also recognised by the international auction house Bonhams, which offered this particular example at an auction in Knokke-Heist in 2013. The combination of its exceptional Belgian coachwork, original paintwork, matching-numbers engine and documented history makes this Austin a remarkable collector's automobile.
This 1949 Austin A125 Sheerline by Vesters & Neirinck is far more than a classic British luxury car. It represents a unique example of Belgian coachbuilding craftsmanship, with only one example in existence worldwide. With its authentic appearance, remarkable history and possible connection to King Leopold III, it is an exceptional classic for collectors of historic automobiles and unique coachbuilt creations.
