Aurora GRX – A Rare Piece of Forgotten Automotive History, Now Available!
This is an Aurora GRX. A hand-built Canadian sports car from the early 1980s, created in an era when small manufacturers could still turn big ideas into reality. Production was extremely limited, with various historical sources suggesting that only around 160–175 examples were ever built.
The story begins in Canada. When Aurora Cars Limited launched the project in Ontario in the early 1980s, they chose a different direction from most Cobra-inspired cars. Rather than adopting the wide and brutal proportions of the 427, Aurora drew inspiration from the much slimmer and more elegant appearance of the early Cobra models, often referred to as the “slabside.”
The result was a car with a presence all its own. Low, narrow and elegant! A long bonnet, compact cockpit and clean, purposeful lines.
Far more than just a beautiful body, this was a wholehearted and ambitious project...
Beneath the classic bodywork lies a thoroughly engineered construction featuring a tubular chassis, independent suspension and disc brakes on all four wheels.
Production was extremely labour-intensive, with each car reportedly requiring around 450 hours to build. This was not mass production, but small-scale automobile manufacturing at a level that has almost disappeared today.
Nor was anything spared under the bonnet. Power comes from a 5.0-litre Ford 302 V8 – an engine that has written its own chapter in American automotive history.
Here, it is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox (!!!) and rear-wheel drive. A 5.0-litre V8 in a large American car is one thing. In a small, low-slung roadster, it is something else entirely.
Performance here is about far more than a number on paper. It is about response, torque, the pulse of a V8 and the feeling of sitting close to the machinery. The low seating position, compact body and manual gearbox deliver a direct, analogue driving experience that modern cars offer less and less.
The formula is simple and timeless.
Sadly, the Aurora story lasted only a few years. The cars were complex and labour-intensive to build, production remained extremely limited, and the project eventually disappeared from the market. No mass production followed.
No modern successor ever came.
As a result, the Aurora GRX remains a rare and almost forgotten footnote in sports car history – known to enthusiasts, yet unfamiliar to most. And perhaps that is exactly what makes it so interesting today?
There are many classic sports cars...
There are many Cobra replicas...
But there are very few Aurora GRXs!
This is a car for the enthusiast who appreciates the unexpected. For the collector who understands that rarity does not always come with the most famous badge on the bonnet. And for the driver who still believes that a sports car should be low, mechanical, manual and alive. :)
