In 1995, 111,827 German marks could buy you a particularly spacious apartment. Or this Audi. The first owner ordered this Audi A8 4.2 Quattro and added enough optional equipment to bring the final purchase price to exactly that amount. This was not an impulse purchase.
The A8 was introduced in 1994 as Audi’s new flagship model. Mercedes-Benz had the S-Class, BMW had the 7 Series, and Audi decided it was time to enter that conversation in earnest. Not by simply building a larger Audi, but by constructing it from aluminum.
The A8’s body was based on the Audi Space Frame, a load-bearing structure made entirely of aluminum. This made the A8 the first series-production luxury sedan with a fully aluminum body. Audi positioned the A8 as a luxury sedan for someone who preferred to drive themselves. It offered the comfort and space of a large executive car, yet felt less detached than some of its rivals. Its aluminum construction and permanent all-wheel drive also gave it a distinctly technical identity that was unmistakably Audi.
