Geboren in 1997, luidde de eerste serie Lotus Elise’s (1.8-16V 120) een nieuw tijdperk in voor lichtgewicht sportauto's. Het geheim zat hem in de materialen. Vervaardigd met een mix van aluminium belichaamt de Elise het iconische Lotus-ethos van "optimale prestaties door lichtheid". Aluminium werd omarmd als het kernelement voor de Elise. Door het hele design van de Elise, werden lichtgewichtcomponenten met chirurgische precisie ingezet op strategische locaties. Niet alleen in de carrosserie, maar ook in de structuur van het chassis.
