2003 | Mercedes-Benz SL 55 AMG

The fifth generation of the legendary SL Series convertible sportscars was known as the R230. It featured a fully retractable hardtop that was marketed as the Vario Roof, a first for the SL class although it had been available on the smaller SLK model since 1997. The flagship models were built by AMG in the form of the SL55 and SL65, both highly tuned versions of the SL500 and SL600 respectively. The SL55 was powered by a mighty supercharged version of the 5.5 litre, V8 which produced 493bhp and achieved 0-62 in 4.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph (governed). In theory, the SL55 could reach 190mph if the car was de-restricted but, for many, the acceleration and top speed is impressive enough in its standard form.

This stunning privately owned example is presented in an optional Tellur Silver metallic sitting on AMG 18" five spoke alloy wheels. Purchased new on 19th of September 2002 through the then owners company, it was later transferred to his private ownership whilst presiding in Nottingham. Boasting just three former keepers, this is a very well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history detailed below. The original purchase price for a late 2002 (2003MY) SL55 was £91,345, this example with extras including Distronic at £1,600, a TV tuner at £720, Parktronic at £590 and the exclusive desirable full extended Nappa Leather replacing the faux leather dashboard and door trims, a £2,310 option, thus carried a purchase price from Mertrux Mercedes-Benz of £96,565.

The SL55 is an incredible car, comfortable and luxurious while capable of supercar performance all with a retractable hardtop roof. This particular example had a full Mercedes-Benz health check in 2024, beforehand the owner had spent time and effort ensuring everything worked as it should (and still does) and upon testing, at time of consignment, we could not find any function not operating as it should. Sitting on correct and factory recommended Pirelli P Zero tyres with barely any wear, this SL55 has an MoT test certificate until April 2026 with no advisories, which was obtained shortly after a minor service, after which the decision was taken that the car was to be sold by its current owner.

Offered with a comprehensive history file, original service handbook and backpack, two working keys, a dashcam and a very well installed mobile telephone cradle that wirelessly charges your phone (see video demonstration). Described by the owner of an SL55, Jeremy Clarkson, as the 'Swiss army knife' of the car world, he said: 'It's a top down funster, a long-distance cruiser, a muscle car, a Messerschmitt, pose mobile.'
