Descripción

The Mercedes-Benz W113 series SL sports cars were produced between 1963 and 1971, when replaced by the R107 series SL-Class, with around 49,000 built during that period. They were offered with a number of different capacity six-cylinder engines – ranging from the initial 230SL, through 250SL to the 280SL (introduced in 1967).

The W113 was styled by Paul Bracq and earned the name of ‘Pagoda’ because of its unique concave roof. Although designated ‘Sports Light’, and only available in 2-seat, convertible/roadster style, this was a solidly constructed car built to a very high standard. Some concession to weight saving was offered with an alloy bonnet, bootlid, hood cover and door skins. It has the reputation of being known as one of the most reliable and sturdy Mercedes models ever produced, offering a reasonably sporting drive allied to excellent touring comfort.

This example was first registered new, in the UK, in April 1970. In 1973, it relocated along with its owner to Jersey, being re-registered in the island in February of that year. The service history is available from new, with invoices etc. from 1975 onward, detailing both the renovation/restoration and regular maintenance work which the car has received, keeping it in good condition. In recent years it has seen relatively little use.

The 280 SL has a straight-six engine with a strong seven-bearing crank, with good power (nearly 170 bhp) and torque characteristics, driving through an excellent four-speed automatic transmission. At 75,000 miles, in October 1980 a new short block engine was fitted by Mercedes in the UK, owing to wear in the original. With around 40,000 miles subsequently clocked up, the engine is in good fettle and the car drives well. The braking system received attention in 2016 with new parts fitted as required.

Unsurprisingly, given the car’s age, it has received some bodywork attention over the years, including a full repaint in 1985, with the most recent bodywork repairs carried out in 2016. The Mercedes remains solid and very presentable but is now showing some signs of age with the finish looking a little scruffy in places. As seen in the accompanying photos, the SL has both the standard folding soft-top (which looks relatively recent) and optional hardtop.

The interior is finished in hard-wearing black MB Tex and is generally in good shape – the seats are patinated commensurate with their age and the carpets neither ripped nor markedly faded. The wood trim and dashboard are all present and correct. A modern Blaupunkt radio/CD player is fitted.

A solid and presentable example of an iconic Pagoda SL Mercedes with probably the best version motor fitted to the Series. In good condition considering it has had over 50 years use, this is not a restored car, rather one that has received maintenence and attention over the years. There is scope to enhance the car's condition and value. With a long documented history and in the hands of a single, careful custodian since 2005, this stylish and glamourous sports tourer is ready to be enjoyed by a new owner.

The car is Jersey registered and the current 4-digit Jersey registration is not included in the sale. We can assist with shipping and importation processes if required and can ship worldwide.
