Rare Ponton Cabriolet, extensively restored, with documented history and Classic Data appraisal

Highlights

Only around 1,251 examples of the Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet were produced, making it one of the most exclusive open variants of the Ponton series. This particular car benefits from a comprehensive restoration carried out using original parts, as well as a well-documented history including long-term family ownership. A Classic Data appraisal from 2023 confirms a very good overall condition (grade 2+) and a replacement value of €187,000. Approximately 20,000 kilometres have been driven since restoration, accompanied by continuous care and maintenance.

Model History and Background

With the introduction of the Ponton series in the mid-1950s, Mercedes-Benz ushered in a new era of automotive design. The unitary body construction, clean lines, and high level of build quality made these cars symbols of Germany’s post-war economic recovery. In particular, the Cabriolet versions of the 220 S ranked among the most prestigious vehicles of their time.

The design combined classical proportions with modern clarity, while materials such as chrome, fine wood, and high-quality leather underscored the brand’s premium positioning. Contemporary sources often described the Cabriolet as a “rolling salon” rather than mere transportation. Its price reflected this status—it is often said that one could have purchased several Volkswagen Beetles or even two Porsche 356 Coupés for the same amount.

This Vehicle

Exterior

The two-tone black and grey paintwork highlights the elegant lines of the Ponton Cabriolet while emphasising its understated exclusivity. Chrome elements and body details are harmoniously integrated into the overall appearance. The restoration was carried out with particular attention to authenticity and detail, resulting in a cohesive and refined presentation.

Interior

The interior features classic materials such as leather and wood, reflecting the characteristic design language of the 1950s. Particularly noteworthy is the Becker “Mexico” radio with automatic tuning, which represented a technological highlight at the time. Overall, the cabin conveys the impression of an authentically restored vehicle that has retained its historical character.

Technical

While detailed technical data is not available, the vehicle is described as reliable and regularly maintained. Approximately 20,000 kilometres have been driven since restoration, indicating active use combined with careful upkeep. There is no maintenance backlog, and the car will receive a fresh TÜV inspection prior to delivery.

History

This example was delivered in 1957 via the Mercedes-Benz branch in Hanover to a university professor. It later spent several years in Turkey before returning to Germany in 1967. Subsequently, it passed into the ownership of a family member and remained there for several decades. After approximately 30 years, the vehicle was sold due to the owner’s age.

At that time, the car was in need of restoration but retained strong underlying substance. Between October 2007 and July 2009, it underwent a comprehensive and meticulous restoration under the direction of Stefan Weinstock (Weinstock Klassik, Wachtberg), using exclusively original parts.

Service and Documentation

A Classic Data appraisal from 2023 confirms the vehicle’s condition rating of 2+ and a replacement value of €187,000. The car has been regularly serviced and carefully maintained. A ceramic coating has been applied, and the Michelin whitewall tyres (7.25 R13) are in good condition.

Summary

The Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet is among the most elegant open cars of the 1950s, embodying a blend of craftsmanship and prestige. This example stands out due to its documented history, high-quality restoration, and very good overall condition. It represents an opportunity to acquire a classic Cabriolet with strong authenticity and timeless appeal, suitable for both driving enjoyment and concours-style events.

Comment

Some cars impress with performance—others with presence. The 220 S Cabriolet clearly belongs to the latter category. It does not simply drive, it glides. And therein lies its appeal: an open expression of the post-war era that has lost none of its dignity.
