By the late 1960s, the cultural revolution had reached automotive design. Young Italian designers such as Marcello Gandini and Giorgio Giugiaro dared to redefine the automobile with an entirely new form: the wedge. Low, dramatic shapes emerged, including Gandini’s Alfa Romeo 33 Carabo – a prototype with a deliberately erased front face, its bonnet flowing almost seamlessly into the windscreen. Giugiaro, meanwhile, styled the Lotus Esprit for Colin Chapman, creating a wedge shape scarcely less futuristic. This bold new cool was rewarded when the Esprit appeared in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me.
Our Esprit belongs to the fourth generation and was sold new in the summer of 1995 in Conthey, in Switzerland’s Lower Valais region. Although the fourth-generation Esprit appears somewhat less angular overall, the fascination of the wedge shape remains undiminished. The mid-mounted engine is still Lotus’s characteristic four-cylinder unit; with turbocharging, it produces an impressive 287 bhp from just 2.2 litres of displacement. In 2022 and 2023, the engine was comprehensively overhauled by a recognised Lotus specialist at a cost exceeding CHF 20,000.
Only 58 examples of the S4s specification were produced between 1995 and 1996, and this car is the 22nd built. It is finished in Norfolk Mustard with a black interior and is equipped with the optional S4-style seats. In this exact configuration, only seven Esprits left the Lotus factory. An independent valuation report rates this Esprit with an overall condition score of 1.9, and the car will undergo fresh veteran certification in Switzerland in February 2026. This presents a rare opportunity to acquire a truly outstanding, second-owner Esprit with just 82,000 kilometres from new – naturally fully documented.
