When the Jaguar E-Type was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961, Jaguar reportedly had to drive an additional example from Coventry to Switzerland because journalists and customers were literally lining up to see the car. The story goes that even Enzo Ferrari described it as “the most beautiful car ever made.” Whether he said those exact words or not? Honestly, once you see an E-Type like this, it hardly matters anymore.
This particular example is an early 4.2 Litre Series 1 Coupé from 1964. Precisely the version many enthusiasts consider the ideal balance within the E-Type generations. It still retains the pure lines of the first series, yet now benefits from the larger 4.2-liter inline-six, the improved gearbox, and more powerful brake assistance. The result is an E-Type that not only looks sensational, but genuinely drives exceptionally well too.
We are particularly impressed by this example. This E-Type feels solid, tight, and refined in a way rarely encountered with restored E-Types. The doors close with that wonderfully heavy precision enthusiasts immediately appreciate. The body feels exceptionally rigid, the paintwork is of a very high standard, and out on the road the Jaguar leaves a remarkably mature impression. Clearly, this was a restoration where attention was paid to far more than appearance alone.
The color combination is simply outstanding. Dark Blue combined with a red interior remains one of the strongest specifications ever offered on an E-Type. There is something special about it: understated and elegant on the outside, while the interior adds warmth and character.
In addition, this Jaguar has been subtly modified for more comfortable use. This example benefits from power-assisted brakes and slightly wider wire wheels, improvements that noticeably enhance the driving characteristics without compromising the car’s original character. Exactly as you would want in a Jaguar like this: classic in appearance, yet just a little more enjoyable on modern roads.
Under the long hood lies, of course, the famous Jaguar inline-six. An engine that not only sounds powerful, but also feels wonderfully smooth. Compared to the earlier 3.8-liter, the 4.2 mainly delivers more torque and greater refinement, making this Coupé especially suitable for long-distance touring. And that fits the character of the closed E-Type perfectly. While the Roadster is primarily about open-air enjoyment, the Coupé feels much more like a true Grand Tourer. Faster, quieter, and surprisingly practical thanks to the large rear hatch.
