Almost 7 years ago I bought this half finished but driving project. The body was restored and fully coated before painting. (See pictures) One of the known Spider problems, sagging of the doors was fixed by welding extra support in to the doors. All the rust was taken care of and some bodyparts were replaced. It then was finished in the beautiful Blu Scuro 456 paint, period correct without a clearcoat. The paint has been since then in perfect condition and it has been Glascoated.
But unfortunately the engine, drivetrain and undercarriage and interior were in terrible condition. So the fun could begin.
We removed the engine, gearbox, subframe and drive train to start a rebuild.
The subframe was in bad condition, so that got an upgrade. All new bolts were welded in.
The engine was rebuild, crankshaft (bought from Martin Willems Spider Specialist) has been ground for new bearings. The cylinders were honed to fit the 1st oversize pistons.
A new airflowmeter was installed and at the same time the US eco parts were deleted.
The subframe and all parts have been powdercoated black.
The car was the lowered to European Specs, with new Abarth style wheels and Vredestein tires.
The 3 speed automatic gearbox was replaced with a 5 speed manual.
This makes the driving experience so much better.
The engine sounds beautifully, partly due to the custom stainless steel exhaust. The typically Italian exhaust note is present. You can hear the perfect exhaus pops, within limits. So not irritating for anyone.
Every year before the car is taken out of storage, the engine oil is changed.
All electric wiring has been checked and replaced when deemed necessary and the infamous "Brown wire issue" has been taken care of.
The interior was made completely new with super soft but durable Nappa leather. Two colors were used , Camel 05502 and Shadow Blue 55186. When the car is parked in the sun with the top down, I cover the leather dashboard to prevent discoloration by the sun.
New door cards, new seat foam. New interior and boot mat. The center console is covered in leather as well.
A new luxury softtop has been installed and a automated tonneau was made.
An original Italian Nardi steering wheel has been fitted.
All parts were bought at Martin Willems. European Spider specialist.
Over 900 photos available from import in to Europe, body restoration and then complete rebuild.
If it is such a good car as I'm trying to describe, why sell it you might ask?
Time to enjoy the car is an issue, I have more classic cars than just the Fiat and maybe it's time to start a new project.
This means that it is not a nececcary sale, but on,y if I can find the next enthusiast who will enjoy it as much I do. The Spider is stored in a dry and warm environment and has never been driven in the rain since my rebuild.
Funfact, this beautiful Spider Sport was imported in to the Netherlands on 20/08/1992 and since I'm the third owner. Originally the Spider drive in Louisiana USA.
The Spider was also featured in a Dutch tv car programme.
